| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | As reported in bug #15613 from Srinivasan S A, file_fdw and postgres_fdw neglected to mark plain baserel foreign paths as parameterized when the relation has lateral_relids. Other FDWs have surely copied this mistake, so rather than just patching those two modules, install a band-aid fix in create_foreignscan_path to rectify the mistake centrally. Although the band-aid is enough to fix the visible symptom, correct the calls in file_fdw and postgres_fdw anyway, so that they are valid examples for external FDWs. Also, since the band-aid isn't enough to make this work for parameterized foreign joins, throw an elog(ERROR) if such a case is passed to create_foreignscan_path. This shouldn't pose much of a problem for existing external FDWs, since it's likely they aren't trying to make such paths anyway (though some of them may need a defense against joins with lateral_relids, similar to the one this patch installs into postgres_fdw). Add some assertions in relnode.c to catch future occurrences of the same error --- in particular, as backstop against core-code mistakes like the one fixed by commit bdd9a99aa. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Back-patch commit dddfc4cb2, which broke LDFLAGS and related Makefile variables into two parts, one for within-build-tree library references and one for external libraries, to ensure that the order of -L flags has all of the former before all of the latter. This turns out to fix a problem recently noted on buildfarm member peripatus, that we attempted to incorporate code from libpgport.a into a shared library. That will fail on platforms that are sticky about putting non-PIC code into shared libraries. (It's quite surprising we hadn't seen such failures before, since the code in question has been like that for a long time.) I think that peripatus' problem could have been fixed with just a subset of this patch; but since the previous issue of accidentally linking to the wrong copy of a Postgres shlib seems likely to bite people in the field, let's just back-patch the whole change. Now that commit dddfc4cb2 has survived some beta testing, I'm less afraid to back-patch it than I was at the time. This also fixes undesired inclusion of "-DFRONTEND" in pg_config's CPPFLAGS output (in 9.6 and up) and undesired inclusion of "-L../../src/common" in its LDFLAGS output (in all supported branches). | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | rewriteTargetListUD's processing is dependent on the relkind of the query's target table. That was fine at the time it was made to act that way, even for queries on inheritance trees, because all tables in an inheritance tree would necessarily be plain tables. However, the 9.5 feature addition allowing some members of an inheritance tree to be foreign tables broke the assumption that rewriteTargetListUD's output tlist could be applied to all child tables with nothing more than column-number mapping. This led to visible failures if foreign child tables had row-level triggers, and would also break in cases where child tables belonged to FDWs that used methods other than CTID for row identification. To fix, delay running rewriteTargetListUD until after the planner has expanded inheritance, so that it is applied separately to the (already mapped) tlist for each child table. We can conveniently call it from preprocess_targetlist. Refactor associated code slightly to avoid the need to heap_open the target relation multiple times during preprocess_targetlist. (The APIs remain a bit ugly, particularly around the point of which steps scribble on parse->targetList and which don't. But avoiding such scribbling would require a change in FDW callback APIs, which is more pain than it's worth.) Also fix ExecModifyTable to ensure that "tupleid" is reset to NULL when we transition from rows providing a CTID to rows that don't. (That's really an independent bug, but it manifests in much the same cases.) Add a regression test checking one manifestation of this problem, which was that row-level triggers on a foreign child table did not work right. Back-patch to 9.5 where the problem was introduced. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | We had three occurrences of essentially the same coding pattern wherein we tried to retrieve a query result from a libpq connection without blocking. In the case where PQconsumeInput failed (typically indicating a lost connection), all three loops simply gave up and returned, forgetting to clear any previously-collected PGresult object. Since those are malloc'd not palloc'd, the oversight results in a process-lifespan memory leak. One instance, in libpqwalreceiver, is of little significance because the walreceiver process would just quit anyway if its connection fails. But we might as well fix it. The other two instances, in postgres_fdw, are somewhat more worrisome because at least in principle the scenario could be repeated, allowing the amount of memory leaked to build up to something worth worrying about. Moreover, in these cases the loops contain CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS calls, as well as other calls that could potentially elog(ERROR), providing another way to exit without having cleared the PGresult. Here we need to add PG_TRY logic similar to what exists in quite a few other places in postgres_fdw. Coverity noted the libpqwalreceiver bug; I found the other two cases by checking all calls of PQconsumeInput. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit f039eaac7131ef2a4cf63a10cf98486f8bcd09d2, later back-patched with commit 1b812afb0eafe125b820cc3b95e7ca03821aa675, allowed many of the queries issued by postgres_fdw to fetch remote data to respond to cancel interrupts in a timely fashion. However, it didn't do anything about the transaction control commands, which remained noninterruptible. Improve the situation by changing do_sql_command() to retrieve query results using pgfdw_get_result(), which uses the asynchronous interface to libpq so that it can check for interrupts every time libpq returns control. Since this might result in a situation where we can no longer be sure that the remote transaction state matches the local transaction state, add a facility to force all levels of the local transaction to abort if we've lost track of the remote state; without this, an apparently-successful commit of the local transaction might fail to commit changes made on the remote side. Also, add a 60-second timeout for queries issue during transaction abort; if that expires, give up and mark the state of the connection as unknown. Drop all such connections when we exit the local transaction. Together, these changes mean that if we're aborting the local toplevel transaction anyway, we can just drop the remote connection in lieu of waiting (possibly for a very long time) for it to complete an abort. This still leaves quite a bit of room for improvement. PQcancel() has no asynchronous interface, so if we get stuck sending the cancel request we'll still hang. Also, PQsetnonblocking() is not used, which means we could block uninterruptibly when sending a query. There might be some other optimizations possible as well. Nonetheless, this allows us to escape a wait for an unresponsive remote server quickly in many more cases than previously. Report by Suraj Kharage. Patch by me and Rafia Sabih. For ALTER FOREIGN TABLE OPTIONS, do this through the standard method of forcing a relcache flush on the table. For ALTER FOREIGN DATA WRAPPER and ALTER SERVER, just flush the whole plan cache on any change in pg_foreign_data_wrapper or pg_foreign_server. That matches the way we handle some other low-probability cases such as opclass changes, and it's unclear that the case arises often enough to be worth working harder. Besides, that gives a patch that is simple enough to back-patch with confidence. Back-patch to 9.3. In principle we could apply the code change to 9.2 as well, but (a) we lack postgres_fdw to test it with, (b) it's doubtful that anyone is doing anything exciting enough with FDWs that far back to need this desperately, and (c) the patch doesn't apply cleanly. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commits 4452000f3 et al established semantics for NullTest.argisrow that are a bit different from its initial conception: rather than being merely a cache of whether we've determined the input to have composite type, the flag now has the further meaning that we should apply field-by-field testing as per the standard's definition of IS [NOT] NULL. If argisrow is false and yet the input has composite type, the construct instead has the semantics of IS [NOT] DISTINCT FROM NULL. Update the comments in primnodes.h to clarify this, and fix ruleutils.c and deparse.c to print such cases correctly. In the case of ruleutils.c, this merely results in cosmetic changes in EXPLAIN output, since the case can't currently arise in stored rules. However, it represents a live bug for deparse.c, which would formerly have sent a remote query that had semantics different from the local behavior. (From the user's standpoint, this means that testing a remote nested-composite column for null-ness could have had unexpected recursive behavior much like that fixed in 4452000f3.) In a related but somewhat independent fix, make plancat.c set argisrow to false in all NullTest expressions constructed to represent "attnotnull" constructs. Since attnotnull is actually enforced as a simple null-value check, this is a more accurate representation of the semantics; we were previously overpromising what it meant for composite columns, which might possibly lead to incorrect planner optimizations. (It seems that what the SQL spec expects a NOT NULL constraint to mean is an IS NOT NULL test, so arguably we are violating the spec and should fix attnotnull to do the other thing. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit e7cb7ee14555cc9c5773e2c102efd6371f6f2005 provided basic infrastructure for allowing a foreign data wrapper or custom scan provider to replace a join of one or more tables with a scan. However, this infrastructure failed to take into account the need for possible EvalPlanQual rechecks, and ExecScanFetch would fail an assertion (or just overwrite memory) if such a check was attempted for a plan containing a pushed-down join. To fix, adjust the EPQ machinery to skip some processing steps when scanrelid == 0, making those the responsibility of scan's recheck method, which also has the responsibility in this case of correctly populating the relevant slot. To allow foreign scans to gain control in the right place to make use of this new facility, add a new, optional RecheckForeignScan method. Also, allow a foreign scan to have a child plan, which can be used to correctly populate the slot (or perhaps for something else, but this is the only use currently envisioned). | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This fixes a long-standing bug which was discovered while investigating the interaction between the new join pushdown code and the EvalPlanQual machinery: if a ForeignScan appears on the inner side of a paramaterized nestloop, an EPQ recheck would re-return the original tuple even if it no longer satisfied the pushed-down quals due to changed parameter values. This fix adds a new member to ForeignScan and ForeignScanState and a new argument to make_foreignscan, and requires changes to FDWs which push down quals to populate that new argument with a list of quals they have chosen to push down. Therefore, I'm only back-patching to 9.5, even though the bug is not new in 9.5. Etsuro Fujita, reviewed by me and by Kyotaro Horiguchi.
* Improve handling of collations in contrib/postgres_fdw.Tom Lane2015-09-24
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | If we have a local Var of say varchar type with default collation, and we apply a RelabelType to convert that to text with default collation, we don't want to consider that as creating an FDW_COLLATE_UNSAFE situation. It should be okay to compare that to a remote Var, so long as the remote Var determines the comparison collation. (When we actually ship such an expression to the remote side, the local Var would become a Param with default collation, meaning the remote Var would in fact control the comparison collation, because non-default implicit collation overrides default implicit collation in parse_collate.c.) To fix, be more precise about what FDW_COLLATE_NONE means: it applies either to a noncollatable data type or to a collatable type with default collation, if that collation can't be traced to a remote Var. (When it can, FDW_COLLATE_SAFE is appropriate.) We were essentially using that interpretation already at the Var/Const/Param level, but we weren't bubbling it up properly. An alternative fix would be to introduce a separate FDW_COLLATE_DEFAULT value to describe the second situation, but that would add more code without changing the actual behavior, so it didn't seem worthwhile. Also, since we're clarifying the rule to be that we care about whether operator/function input collations match, there seems no need to fail immediately upon seeing a Const/Param/non-foreign-Var with nondefault collation. We only have to reject if it appears in a collation-sensitive context (for example, "var IS NOT NULL" is perfectly safe from a collation standpoint, whatever collation the var has). So just set the state to UNSAFE rather than failing immediately. Per report from Jeevan Chalke. This essentially corrects some sloppy thinking in commit ed3ddf918b59545583a4b374566bc1148e75f593, so back-patch to 9.3 where that logic appeared.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | If a postgres_fdw foreign table is a non-locked source relation in an UPDATE, DELETE, or SELECT FOR UPDATE/SHARE, and the query selects its ctid column, the wrong value would be returned if an EvalPlanQual recheck occurred. This happened because the foreign table's result row was copied via the ROW_MARK_COPY code path, and EvalPlanQualFetchRowMarks just unconditionally set the reconstructed tuple's t_self to "invalid". To fix that, we can have EvalPlanQualFetchRowMarks copy the composite datum's t_ctid field, and be sure to initialize that along with t_self when postgres_fdw constructs a tuple to return. If we just did that much then EvalPlanQualFetchRowMarks would start returning "(0,0)" as ctid for all other ROW_MARK_COPY cases, which perhaps does not matter much, but then again maybe it might. The cause of that is that heap_form_tuple, which is the ultimate source of all composite datums, simply leaves t_ctid as zeroes in newly constructed tuples. That seems like a bad idea on general principles: a field that's really not been initialized shouldn't appear to have a valid value. So let's eat the trivial additional overhead of doing "ItemPointerSetInvalid(&(td->t_ctid))" in heap_form_tuple. This closes out our handling of Etsuro Fujita's report that tableoid and ctid weren't correctly set in postgres_fdw EvalPlanQual cases. Along the way we did a great deal of work to improve FDWs' ability to control row locking behavior; which was not wasted effort by any means, but it didn't end up being a fix for this problem because that feature would be too expensive for postgres_fdw to use all the time. Although the fix for the tableoid misbehavior was back-patched, I'm hesitant to do so here; it seems far less likely that people would care about remote ctid than tableoid, and even such a minor behavioral change as this in heap_form_tuple is perhaps best not back-patched. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit e7cb7ee14555cc9c5773e2c102efd6371f6f2005 included some design decisions that seem pretty questionable to me, and there was quite a lot of stuff not to like about the documentation and comments. Clean up as follows: * Consider foreign joins only between foreign tables on the same server, rather than between any two foreign tables with the same underlying FDW handler function. In most if not all cases, the FDW would simply have had to apply the same-server restriction itself (far more expensively, both for lack of caching and because it would be repeated for each combination of input sub-joins), or else risk nasty bugs. Anyone who's really intent on doing something outside this restriction can always use the set_join_pathlist_hook. * Rename fdw_ps_tlist/custom_ps_tlist to fdw_scan_tlist/custom_scan_tlist to better reflect what they're for, and allow these custom scan tlists to be used even for base relations. * Change make_foreignscan() API to include passing the fdw_scan_tlist value, since the FDW is required to set that. Backwards compatibility doesn't seem like an adequate reason to expect FDWs to set it in some ad-hoc extra step, and anyway existing FDWs can just pass NIL. * Change the API of path-generating subroutines of add_paths_to_joinrel, and in particular that of GetForeignJoinPaths and set_join_pathlist_hook, so that various less-used parameters are passed in a struct rather than as separate parameter-list entries. The objective here is to reduce the probability that future additions to those parameter lists will result in source-level API breaks for users of these hooks. It's possible that this is even a small win for the core code, since most CPU architectures can't pass more than half a dozen parameters efficiently anyway. I kept root, joinrel, outerrel, innerrel, and jointype as separate parameters to reduce code churn in joinpath.c --- in particular, putting jointype into the struct would have been problematic because of the subroutines' habit of changing their local copies of that variable. * Avoid ad-hocery in ExecAssignScanProjectionInfo. It was probably all right for it to know about IndexOnlyScan, but if the list is to grow we should refactor the knowledge out to the callers. * Restore nodeForeignscan.c's previous use of the relcache to avoid extra GetFdwRoutine lookups for base-relation scans. * Lots of cleanup of documentation and missed comments. Re-order some code additions into more logical places.
* Add support for INSERT ... ON CONFLICT DO NOTHING/UPDATE.Andres Freund2015-05-08
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The newly added ON CONFLICT clause allows to specify an alternative to raising a unique or exclusion constraint violation error when inserting. ON CONFLICT refers to constraints that can either be specified using a inference clause (by specifying the columns of a unique constraint) or by naming a unique or exclusion constraint. DO NOTHING avoids the constraint violation, without touching the pre-existing row. DO UPDATE SET ... [WHERE ...] updates the pre-existing tuple, and has access to both the tuple proposed for insertion and the existing tuple; the optional WHERE clause can be used to prevent an update from being executed. The UPDATE SET and WHERE clauses have access to the tuple proposed for insertion using the "magic" EXCLUDED alias, and to the pre-existing tuple using the table name or its alias. This feature is often referred to as upsert. This is implemented using a new infrastructure called "speculative insertion". It is an optimistic variant of regular insertion that first does a pre-check for existing tuples and then attempts an insert. If a violating tuple was inserted concurrently, the speculatively inserted tuple is deleted and a new attempt is made. If the pre-check finds a matching tuple the alternative DO NOTHING or DO UPDATE action is taken. If the insertion succeeds without detecting a conflict, the tuple is deemed inserted. To handle the possible ambiguity between the excluded alias and a table named excluded, and for convenience with long relation names, INSERT INTO now can alias its target table. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The previous coding in get_const_expr() tried to avoid quoting integer, float, and numeric literals if at all possible. While that looks nice, it means that dumped expressions might re-parse to something that's semantically equivalent but not the exact same parsetree; for example a FLOAT8 constant would re-parse as a NUMERIC constant with a cast to FLOAT8. Though the result would be the same after constant-folding, this is problematic in certain contexts. In particular, Jeff Davis pointed out that this could cause unexpected failures in ALTER INHERIT operations because of child tables having not-exactly-equivalent CHECK expressions. Therefore, favor correctness over legibility and dump such constants in quotes except in the limited cases where they'll be interpreted as the same type even without any casting. This results in assorted small changes in the regression test outputs, and will affect display of user-defined views and rules similarly. The odds of that causing problems in the field seem non-negligible; given the lack of previous complaints, it seems best not to change this in the back branches.

Much of the system was already ready for this, but we had to fix a few things of course, mostly in the area of planner and executor handling of row locks. As side effects of this, allow foreign tables to have NOT VALID CHECK constraints (and hence to accept ALTER ... VALIDATE CONSTRAINT), and to accept ALTER SET STORAGE and ALTER SET WITH/WITHOUT OIDS. Continuing to disallow these things would've required bizarre and inconsistent special cases in inheritance behavior. Since foreign tables don't enforce CHECK constraints anyway, a NOT VALID one is a complete no-op, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't allow it. And it's possible that some FDWs might have use for SET STORAGE or SET WITH OIDS, though doubtless they will be no-ops for most. An additional change in support of this is that when a ModifyTable node has multiple target tables, they will all now be explicitly identified in EXPLAIN output, for example: Update on pt1 (cost=0.00..321.05 rows=3541 width=46) Update on pt1 Foreign Update on ft1 Foreign Update on ft2 Update on child3 -> Seq Scan on pt1 (cost=0.00..0.00 rows=1 width=46) -> Foreign Scan on ft1 (cost=100.00..148.03 rows=1170 width=46) -> Foreign Scan on ft2 (cost=100.00..148.03 rows=1170 width=46) -> Seq Scan on child3 (cost=0.00..25.00 rows=1200 width=46) This was done mainly to provide an unambiguous place to attach "Remote SQL" fields, but it is useful for inherited updates even when no foreign tables are involved. First, that the original LockingClauseStrength isn't stored (and cannot be inferred for foreign tables, which always get ROW_MARK_COPY). Since some PlanRowMarks are created out of whole cloth and don't actually have an ancestral RowMarkClause, this requires adding a dummy LCS_NONE value to enum LockingClauseStrength, which is fairly annoying but the alternatives seem worse. This fix allows getting rid of the use of get_parse_rowmark() in FDWs (as per the discussion around commits 462bd95705a0c23b and 8ec8760fc87ecde0), and it simplifies some things elsewhere. Second, that the representation assumed that all child tables in an inheritance hierarchy would use the same RowMarkType. That's true today but will soon not be true. We add an "allMarkTypes" field that identifies the union of mark types used in all a parent table's children, and use that where appropriate (currently, only in preprocess_targetlist()). In passing fix a couple of minor infelicities left over from the SKIP LOCKED patch, notably that _outPlanRowMark still thought waitPolicy is a bool. Catversion bump is required because the numeric values of enum LockingClauseStrength can appear in on-disk rules. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Previously, if you wanted anything besides C-string hash keys, you had to specify a custom hashing function to hash_create(). Nearly all such callers were specifying tag_hash or oid_hash; which is tedious, and rather error-prone, since a caller could easily miss the opportunity to optimize by using hash_uint32 when appropriate. Replace this with a design whereby callers using simple binary-data keys just specify HASH_BLOBS and don't need to mess with specific support functions. hash_create() itself will take care of optimizing when the key size is four bytes. This nets out saving a few hundred bytes of code space, and offers a measurable performance improvement in tidbitmap.c (which was not exploiting the opportunity to use hash_uint32 for its 4-byte keys). There might be some wins elsewhere too, I didn't analyze closely. In future we could look into offering a similar optimized hashing function for 8-byte keys. Under this design that could be done in a centralized and machine-independent fashion, whereas getting it right for keys of platform-dependent sizes would've been notationally painful before. For the moment, the old way still works fine, so as not to break source code compatibility for loadable modules. Eventually we might want to remove tag_hash and friends from the exported API altogether, since there's no real need for them to be explicitly referenced from outside dynahash.c. Also, add a regression test case showing what postgres_fdw does with FOR UPDATE/SHARE. I'd blithely assumed there was one already, else I'd have realized yesterday that this code didn't work.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Ordinarily we can omit checking of a WHERE condition that matches a partial index's condition, when we are using an indexscan on that partial index. However, in SELECT FOR UPDATE we must include the "redundant" filter condition in the plan so that it gets checked properly in an EvalPlanQual recheck. The planner got this mostly right, but improperly omitted the filter condition if the index in question was on an inheritance child table. In READ COMMITTED mode, this could result in incorrectly returning just-updated rows that no longer satisfy the filter condition. The cause of the error is using get_parse_rowmark() when get_plan_rowmark() is what should be used during planning. In 9.3 and up, also fix the same mistake in contrib/postgres_fdw. It's currently harmless there (for lack of inheritance support) but wrong is wrong, and the incorrect code might get copied to someplace where it's more significant. Report and fix by Kyotaro Horiguchi. Back-patch to all supported branches.

The problem here is only that contrib modules can be built in-tree or using PGXS, and the prerequisite is only applicable in the former case. That was not the right fix, and it was also done in a nonportable way, so revert that.

This avoids stack overflow in parse analysis when dealing with queries having more than a few thousand such clauses; and in any case it removes some rather unsightly inconsistencies, since some parts of parse analysis were generating N-argument ANDs/ORs already. It's still possible to get a stack overflow with weirdly parenthesized input, such as "x AND (y AND (z AND ( ... )))", but such cases are not mainstream usage. The maximum depth of parenthesization is already limited by Bison's stack in such cases, anyway, so that the limit is probably fairly platform-independent.
