If a given relfilenode received both a WAL-skipping COPY and a WAL-logged operation (e.g. INSERT), recovery could lose tuples from the COPY. See src/backend/access/transam/README section "Skipping WAL for New RelFileNode" for the new coding rules. Maintainers of table access methods should examine that section. To maintain data durability, just before commit, we choose between an fsync of the relfilenode and copying its contents to WAL. A new GUC, wal_skip_threshold, guides that choice. If this change slows a workload that creates small, permanent relfilenodes under wal_level=minimal, try adjusting wal_skip_threshold. Users setting a timeout on COMMIT may need to adjust that timeout, and log_min_duration_statement analysis will reflect time consumption moving to COMMIT from commands like COPY. Internally, this requires a reliable determination of whether RollbackAndReleaseCurrentSubTransaction() would unlink a relation's current relfilenode. Introduce rd_firstRelfilenodeSubid. Amend the specification of rd_createSubid such that the field is zero when a new rel has an old rd_node. Make relcache.c retain entries for certain dropped relations until end of transaction. Back-patch to 9.5 (all supported versions). This introduces a new WAL record type, XLOG_GIST_ASSIGN_LSN, without bumping XLOG_PAGE_MAGIC. As always, update standby systems before master systems. This changes sizeof(RelationData) and sizeof(IndexStmt), breaking binary compatibility for affected extensions. (The most recent commit to affect the same class of extensions was 089e4d405d0f3b94c74a2c6a54357a84a681754b.) Kyotaro Horiguchi, reviewed (in earlier, similar versions) by Robert Haas. Alignment overhead should be negligible, because we typically deal with at most few "col op const" expressions in ORDER BY clause. * It fixes handling of "col op NULL" expression in KNN-SP-GiST. Now, these expression are not passed to support functions, which can't deal with them. Instead, NULL result is implicitly assumed. It future we may decide to teach support functions to deal with NULL arguments, but current solution is bugfix suitable for backpatch. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | As src/backend/access/transam/README says, PageGetLSN may only be called by processes holding either exclusive lock on buffer, or a shared lock on buffer plus buffer header lock. Therefore any place that only holds a shared buffer lock must use BufferGetLSNAtomic instead of PageGetLSN, which internally obtains buffer header lock prior to reading the LSN. A few callsites failed to comply with this rule. This was detected by running all tests under a new (not committed) assertion that verifies PageGetLSN locking contract. All but one of the callsites that failed the assertion are fixed by this patch. Remaining callsites were inspected manually and determined not to need any change. The exception (unfixed callsite) is in TestForOldSnapshot, which only has a Page argument, making it impossible to access the corresponding Buffer from it. Fixing that seems a much larger patch that will have to be done separately; and that's just as well, since it was only introduced in 9.6 and other bugs are much older. Some of these bugs are ancient; backpatch all the way back to 9.3. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | GiST's getNextNearest() function attempts to pfree the previously-returned tuple if any (that is, scan->xs_hitup in HEAD, or scan->xs_itup in older branches). However, if we are rescanning a plan node after ending a previous scan early, those tuple pointers could be pointing to garbage, because they would be pointing into the scan's pageDataCxt or queueCxt which has been reset. In a debug build this reliably results in a crash, although I think it might sometimes accidentally fail to fail in production builds. To fix, clear the pointer field anyplace we reset a context it might be pointing into. This may be overkill --- I think probably only the queueCxt case is involved in this bug, so that resetting in gistrescan() would be sufficient --- but dangling pointers are generally bad news, so let's avoid them. Another plausible answer might be to just not bother with the pfree in getNextNearest(). The reconstructed tuples would go away anyway in the context resets, and I'm far from convinced that freeing them a bit earlier really saves anything meaningful. I'll stick with the original logic in this patch, but if we find more problems in the same area we should consider that approach. Per bug #14641 from Denis Smirnov. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | GiST index build could go into an infinite loop when presented with boxes (or points, circles or polygons) containing NaN component values. This happened essentially because the code assumed that x == x is true for any "double" value x; but it's not true for NaNs. The looping behavior was not the only problem though: we also attempted to sort the items using simple double comparisons. Since NaNs violate the trichotomy law, qsort could (in principle at least) get arbitrarily confused and mess up the sorting of ordinary values as well as NaNs. And we based splitting choices on box size calculations that could produce NaNs, again resulting in undesirable behavior. To fix, replace all comparisons of doubles in this logic with float8_cmp_internal, which is NaN-aware and is careful to sort NaNs consistently, higher than any non-NaN. Also rearrange the box size calculation to not produce NaNs; instead it should produce an infinity for a box with NaN on one side and not-NaN on the other. I don't by any means claim that this solves all problems with NaNs in geometric values, but it should at least make GiST index insertion work reliably with such data. It's likely that the index search side of things still needs some work, and probably regular geometric operations too. But with this patch we're laying down a convention for how such cases ought to behave. Per bug #14238 from Guang-Dih Lei. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | We can only support a lossy distance function when the distance function's datatype is comparable with the original ordering operator's datatype. The distance function always returns a float8, so we are limited to float8, and float4 (by a hard-coded cast of the float8 to float4). In light of this limitation, it seems like a good idea to have a separate 'recheck' flag for the ORDER BY expressions, so that if you have a non-lossy distance function, it still works with lossy quals. There are cases like that with the build-in or contrib opclasses, but it's plausible. There was a hidden assumption that the ORDER BY values returned by GiST match the original ordering operator's return type, but there are plenty of examples where that's not true, e.g. in btree_gist and pg_trgm. As long as the distance function is not lossy, we can tolerate that and just not return the distance to the executor (or rather, always return NULL). The executor doesn't need the distances if there are no lossy results. There was another little bug: the recheck variable was not initialized before calling the distance function. That revealed the bigger issue, as the executor tried to reorder tuples that didn't need reordering, and that failed because of the datatype mismatch.

This commit also removes a documentation note added in commit a0a3883, about doing NULL-pointer checks in the "compress" method. It was added based on the fact that some implementations were doing NULL-pointer checks, but those checks were unnecessary in the first place. The NULL-pointer check in gbt_var_same() function was also unnecessary. The arguments to the "same" method come from the "compress", "union", or "picksplit" methods, but none of them return a NULL pointer. None of this is to be confused with SQL NULL values. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Previously, if you wanted anything besides C-string hash keys, you had to specify a custom hashing function to hash_create(). Nearly all such callers were specifying tag_hash or oid_hash; which is tedious, and rather error-prone, since a caller could easily miss the opportunity to optimize by using hash_uint32 when appropriate. Replace this with a design whereby callers using simple binary-data keys just specify HASH_BLOBS and don't need to mess with specific support functions. hash_create() itself will take care of optimizing when the key size is four bytes. This nets out saving a few hundred bytes of code space, and offers a measurable performance improvement in tidbitmap.c (which was not exploiting the opportunity to use hash_uint32 for its 4-byte keys). There might be some wins elsewhere too, I didn't analyze closely. In future we could look into offering a similar optimized hashing function for 8-byte keys. Under this design that could be done in a centralized and machine-independent fashion, whereas getting it right for keys of platform-dependent sizes would've been notationally painful before. For the moment, the old way still works fine, so as not to break source code compatibility for loadable modules. Eventually we might want to remove tag_hash and friends from the exported API altogether, since there's no real need for them to be explicitly referenced from outside dynahash.c. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Each WAL record now carries information about the modified relation and block(s) in a standardized format. That makes it easier to write tools that need that information, like pg_rewind, prefetching the blocks to speed up recovery, etc. There's a whole new API for building WAL records, replacing the XLogRecData chains used previously. The new API consists of XLogRegister* functions, which are called for each buffer and chunk of data that is added to the record. The new API also gives more control over when a full-page image is written, by passing flags to the XLogRegisterBuffer function. This also simplifies the XLogReadBufferForRedo() calls. The function can dig the relation and block number from the WAL record, so they no longer need to be passed as arguments. For the convenience of redo routines, XLogReader now disects each WAL record after reading it, copying the main data part and the per-block data into MAXALIGNed buffers. The data chunks are not aligned within the WAL record, but the redo routines can assume that the pointers returned by XLogRecGet* functions are. Redo routines are now passed the XLogReaderState, which contains the record in the already-disected format, instead of the plain XLogRecord. The new record format also makes the fixed size XLogRecord header smaller, by removing the xl_len field. The length of the "main data" portion is now stored at the end of the WAL record, and there's a separate header after XLogRecord for it. The alignment padding at the end of XLogRecord is also removed. This compansates for the fact that the new format would otherwise be more bulky than the old format. Likewise, the code to turn the root page from non-leaf to leaf page was removed when we got rid of old-style VACUUM FULL. Remove the code to replay that action, too.

This was a leftover from pre-hot standby days, when it was not possible to have scans concurrent with WAL replay. Resetting the right-link was not necessary back then either, but it was done for the sake of tidiness. But with hot standby, it's wrong, because a concurrent scan might still need it. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Memory allocation can fail if you run out of memory, and inside a critical section that will lead to a PANIC. Use conservatively-sized arrays in stack instead. There was previously no explicit limit on the number of pages a GiST split can produce, it was only limited by the number of LWLocks that can be held simultaneously (100 at the moment). This patch adds an explicit limit of 75 pages. That should be plenty, a typical split shouldn't produce more than 2-3 page halves. The bug has been there forever, but only backpatch down to 9.1. The code was changed significantly in 9.1, and it doesn't seem worth the risk or trouble to adapt this for 9.0 and 8.4.

However, there was an oversight in that, namely that multiple scan keys might reference the same column's consistentFn; the code would result in propagating the same cache value into multiple scan keys, resulting in crashes or wrong answers. Use a separate array instead to ensure that each scan key keeps its own state. Per bug #8143 from Joel Roller. Back-patch to 9.2 where the bug was introduced.

In a regular WAL- logged GiST index, the LSN of the page-split record is used for that purpose, and in a temporary index, we can get away with a backend-local counter. Neither of those methods works for an unlogged relation. To provide such an increasing sequence of numbers, create a "fake LSN" counter that is saved and restored across shutdowns. On recovery, unlogged relations are blown away, so the counter doesn't need to survive that either. Jeevan Chalke, based on discussions with Robert Haas, Tom Lane and me.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | After further reflection I was unconvinced that the existing coding is guaranteed to return valid union datums in every code path for multi-column indexes. Fix that by forcing a gistunionsubkey() call at the end of the recursion. Having done that, we can remove some clearly-redundant calls elsewhere. This should be a little faster for multi-column indexes (since the previous coding would uselessly do such a call for each column while unwinding the recursion), as well as much harder to break. Also, simplify the handling of cases where one side or the other of a primary split contains only don't-care tuples. The previous coding used a very ugly hack in removeDontCares() that essentially forced one random tuple to be treated as non-don't-care, providing a random initial choice of seed datum for the secondary split. It seems unlikely that that method will give better-than-random splits. Instead, treat such a split as degenerate and just let the next column determine the split, the same way that we handle fully degenerate cases where the two sides produce identical union datums.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | This LOG message was put in over five years ago with the evident expectation that we'd make all GiST opclasses support secondary split directly. However, no such thing ever happened, and indeed the number of opclasses supporting it decreased to zero in 9.2. The reason is that improving on the default implementation isn't that easy --- the opclass-specific code that did exist, before 9.2, doesn't appear to have been any improvement over the default. Hence, remove the message altogether. There's certainly no point in nagging users about this in released branches, but I doubt that we'll ever implement complete opclass-specific support anyway.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Not only is this implementation of secondary-split not better than the default implementation in gistsplit.c, it's actually worse. The gistsplit.c code at least looks to see if switching the left and right sides would make a better merge with the previously-split tuples, while this doesn't. In any case it's rather useless to support secondary split only in an edge case. There used to be more complete support for it here (in chooseLR()), but that was removed in commit 7f3bd86843e5aad84585a57d3f6b80db3c609916. It appears to me though that the chooseLR() code was really isomorphic to the default implementation, since it was still based on choosing the cheaper way of adding two sub-split vectors that had been chosen without regard to the primary split initially. I think an implementation of secondary split that could beat the default implementation would have to be pretty fully integrated into the split algorithm, not plastered on at the end. Back-patch to 9.2, but not further; previous branches have the chooseLR() code which I don't feel a great need to mess with. This is mainly so we just have two behaviors and not three among the various branches (IOW, this patch is cleanup for commit 7f3bd86843e5aad84585a57d3f6b80db3c609916's incomplete removal of secondary-split support).
