* Define a new, more extensible syntax for COPY options.Tom Lane2009-09-21
| | | | | | | | | This is intentionally similar to the recently revised syntax for EXPLAIN options, ie, (name value, ...). The old syntax is still supported for backwards compatibility, but we intend that any options added in future will be provided only in the new syntax. Robert Haas, Emmanuel Cecchet
* Extend EXPLAIN to allow generic options to be specified.Tom Lane2009-07-26
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The original syntax made it difficult to add options without making them into reserved words. This change parenthesizes the options to avoid that problem, and makes provision for an explicit (and perhaps non-Boolean) value for each option. The original syntax is still supported, but only for the two original options ANALYZE and VERBOSE. As a test case, add a COSTS option that can suppress the planner cost estimates. This may be useful for including EXPLAIN output in the regression tests, which are otherwise unable to cope with cross-platform variations in cost estimates. Robert Haas
* Remove the recently added node types ReloptElem and OptionDefElem in favorTom Lane2009-04-04
| | | | | | of adding optional namespace and action fields to DefElem. Having three node types that do essentially the same thing bloats the code and leads to errors of confusion, such as in yesterday's bug report from Khee Chin.

* Code review for FILLFACTOR patch. Change WITH grammar as per earlierTom Lane2006-07-03
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | discussion (including making def_arg allow reserved words), add missed opt_definition for UNIQUE case. Put the reloptions support code in a less random place (I chose to make a new file access/common/reloptions.c). Eliminate header inclusion creep. Make the index options functions safely user-callable (seems like client apps might like to be able to test validity of options before trying to make an index). Reduce overhead for normal case with no options by allowing rd_options to be NULL. Fix some unmaintainably klugy code, including getting rid of Natts_pg_class_fixed at long last. Some stylistic cleanup too, and pay attention to keeping comments in sync with code. Documentation still needs work, though I did fix the omissions in catalogs.sgml and indexam.sgml.

* Improve parser so that we can show an error cursor position for errorsTom Lane2006-03-14
| | | | | | | | | | | during parse analysis, not only errors detected in the flex/bison stages. This is per my earlier proposal. This commit includes all the basic infrastructure, but locations are only tracked and reported for errors involving column references, function calls, and operators. More could be done later but this seems like a good set to start with. I've also moved the ReportSyntaxErrorPosition logic out of psql and into libpq, which should make it available to more people --- even within psql this is an improvement because warnings weren't handled by ReportSyntaxErrorPosition.

* Reimplement the linked list data structure used throughout the backend.Neil Conway2004-05-26
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In the past, we used a 'Lispy' linked list implementation: a "list" was merely a pointer to the head node of the list. The problem with that design is that it makes lappend() and length() linear time. This patch fixes that problem (and others) by maintaining a count of the list length and a pointer to the tail node along with each head node pointer. A "list" is now a pointer to a structure containing some meta-data about the list; the head and tail pointers in that structure refer to ListCell structures that maintain the actual linked list of nodes. The function names of the list API have also been changed to, I hope, be more logically consistent. By default, the old function names are still available; they will be disabled-by-default once the rest of the tree has been updated to use the new API names.
* Tighten parsing of boolean options to CREATE TYPE and related functions,Tom Lane2004-05-14
| | | | | so as to deliver more useful error messages for mistakes like 'PASSEDBYVALUE = f'. Per gripe from Gaetano Mendola.
* Solve the 'Turkish problem' with undesirable locale behavior for caseTom Lane2004-05-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | conversion of basic ASCII letters. Remove all uses of strcasecmp and strncasecmp in favor of new functions pg_strcasecmp and pg_strncasecmp; remove most but not all direct uses of toupper and tolower in favor of pg_toupper and pg_tolower. These functions use the same notions of case folding already developed for identifier case conversion. I left the straight locale-based folding in place for situations where we are just manipulating user data and not trying to match it to built-in strings --- for example, the SQL upper() function is still locale dependent. Perhaps this will prove not to be what's wanted, but at the moment we can initdb and pass regression tests in Turkish locale.
* Implement a solution to the 'Turkish locale downcases I incorrectly'Tom Lane2004-02-21
| | | | | | problem, per previous discussion. Make some additional changes to centralize the knowledge of just how identifier downcasing is done, in hopes of simplifying any future tweaking in this area.

* Provide an upgrade strategy for dump files containing functions declaredTom Lane2002-09-21
| | | | | | | | with OPAQUE. CREATE LANGUAGE, CREATE TRIGGER, and CREATE TYPE will all accept references to functions declared with OPAQUE --- but they will issue a NOTICE, and will modify the function entries in pg_proc to have the preferred type-safe argument or result types instead of OPAQUE. Per recent pghackers discussions.

* Modify sequence state storage to eliminate dangling-pointer problemTom Lane2002-05-22
| | | | | | | | exemplified by bug #671. Moving the storage to relcache turned out to be a bad idea because relcache might decide to discard the info. Instead, open and close the relcache entry on each sequence operation, and use a record of the current XID to discover whether we already hold AccessShareLock on the sequence.
* The contents of command.c, creatinh.c, define.c, remove.c and rename.cTom Lane2002-04-15
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | have been divided according to the type of object manipulated - so ALTER TABLE code is in tablecmds.c, aggregate commands in aggregatecmds.c and so on. A few common support routines remain in define.c (prototypes in src/include/commands/defrem.h). No code has been changed except for includes to reflect the new files. The prototypes for aggregatecmds.c, functioncmds.c, operatorcmds.c, and typecmds.c remain in src/include/commands/defrem.h. From John Gray <jgray@azuli.co.uk>
* Restructure representation of aggregate functions so that they have pg_procTom Lane2002-04-11
| | | | | | | | | | entries, per pghackers discussion. This fixes aggregates to live in namespaces, and also simplifies/speeds up lookup in parse_func.c. Also, add a 'proimplicit' flag to pg_proc that controls whether a type coercion function may be invoked implicitly, or only explicitly. The current settings of these flags are more permissive than I would like, but we will need to debate and refine the behavior; for now, I avoided breaking regression tests as much as I could.
* Functions live in namespaces. Qualified function names work, egTom Lane2002-04-09
| | | | | SELECT schema1.func2(...). Aggregate names can be qualified at the syntactic level, but the qualification is ignored for the moment.
* Divide functions into three volatility classes (immutable, stable, andTom Lane2002-04-05
| | | | | | | volatile), rather than the old cachable/noncachable distinction. This allows indexscan optimizations in many places where we formerly didn't. Also, add a pronamespace column to pg_proc (it doesn't do anything yet, however).
* pg_type has a typnamespace column; system now supports creating typesTom Lane2002-03-29
| | | | | | in different namespaces. Also, cleanup work on relation namespace support: drop, alter, rename commands work for tables in non-default namespaces.

* Ok. Updated patch attached.Bruce Momjian2002-03-06
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | - domain.patch -> source patch against pgsql in cvs - drop_domain.sgml and create_domain.sgml -> New doc/src/sgml/ref docs - dominfo.txt -> basic domain related queries I used for testing [ ADDED TO /doc] Enables domains of array elements -> CREATE DOMAIN dom int4[3][2]; Uses a typbasetype column to describe the origin of the domain. Copies data to attnotnull rather than processing in execMain(). Some documentation differences from earlier. If this is approved, I'll start working on pg_dump, and a \dD <domain> option in psql, and regression tests. I don't really feel like doing those until the system table structure settles for pg_type. CHECKS when added, will also be copied to to the table attributes. FK Constraints (if I ever figure out how) will be done similarly. Both will lbe handled by MergeDomainAttributes() which is called shortly before MergeAttributes(). Rod Taylor
* Change made to elog:Bruce Momjian2002-03-06
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | o Change all current CVS messages of NOTICE to WARNING. We were going to do this just before 7.3 beta but it has to be done now, as you will see below. o Change current INFO messages that should be controlled by client_min_messages to NOTICE. o Force remaining INFO messages, like from EXPLAIN, VACUUM VERBOSE, etc. to always go to the client. o Remove INFO from the client_min_messages options and add NOTICE. Seems we do need three non-ERROR elog levels to handle the various behaviors we need for these messages. Regression passed.
