While the feature was fully functional, with sufficient test coverage and necessary documentation, it was felt that some parts of the executor and parse-analyzer can use a different design and it wasn't possible to do that in the available time. So it was decided to revert the patch for PG11 and retry again in the future. Thanks again to all reviewers and bug reporters. MERGE provides a single SQL statement that can conditionally INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE rows a task that would other require multiple PL statements. e.g. MERGE INTO target AS t USING source AS s ON t.tid = s.sid WHEN MATCHED AND t.balance > s.delta THEN UPDATE SET balance = t.balance - s.delta WHEN MATCHED THEN DELETE WHEN NOT MATCHED AND s.delta > 0 THEN INSERT VALUES (s.sid, s.delta) WHEN NOT MATCHED THEN DO NOTHING; MERGE works with regular and partitioned tables, including column and row security enforcement, as well as support for row, statement and transition triggers. MERGE is optimized for OLTP and is parameterizable, though also useful for large scale ETL/ELT. MERGE is not intended to be used in preference to existing single SQL commands for INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE since there is some overhead. MERGE can be used statically from PL/pgSQL. MERGE does not yet support inheritance, write rules, RETURNING clauses, updatable views or foreign tables. MERGE follows SQL Standard per the most recent SQL:2016. Includes full tests and documentation, including full isolation tests to demonstrate the concurrent behavior. This version written from scratch in 2017 by Simon Riggs, using docs and tests originally written in 2009. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch does three interrelated things: * Create a new expression execution step type EEOP_PARAM_CALLBACK and add the infrastructure needed for add-on modules to generate that. As discussed, the best control mechanism for that seems to be to add another hook function to ParamListInfo, which will be called by ExecInitExpr if it's supplied and a PARAM_EXTERN Param is found. For stand-alone expressions, we add a new entry point to allow the ParamListInfo to be specified directly, since it can't be retrieved from the parent plan node's EState. * Redesign the API for the ParamListInfo paramFetch hook so that the ParamExternData array can be entirely virtual. This also lets us get rid of ParamListInfo.paramMask, instead leaving it to the paramFetch hook to decide which param IDs should be accessible or not. plpgsql_param_fetch was already doing the identical masking check, so having callers do it too seemed redundant. While I was at it, I added a "speculative" flag to paramFetch that the planner can specify as TRUE to avoid unwanted failures. This solves an ancient problem for plpgsql that it couldn't provide values of non-DTYPE_VAR variables to the planner for fear of triggering premature "record not assigned yet" or "field not found" errors during planning. * Rework plpgsql to get rid of the need for "unshared" parameter lists, by dint of turning the single ParamListInfo per estate into a nearly read-only data structure that doesn't instantiate any per-variable data. Instead, the paramFetch hook controls access to per-variable data and can make the right decisions on the fly, replacing the cases that we used to need multiple ParamListInfos for. This might perhaps have been a performance loss on its own, but by using a paramCompile hook we can bypass plpgsql_param_fetch entirely during normal query execution. (It's now only called when, eg, we copy the ParamListInfo into a cursor portal. copyParamList() or SerializeParamList() effectively instantiate the virtual parameter array as a simple physical array without a paramFetch hook, which is what we want in those cases.) This allows reverting most of commit 6c82d8d1f, though I kept the cosmetic code-consolidation aspects of that (eg the assign_simple_var function). Performance testing shows this to be at worst a break-even change, and it can provide wins ranging up to 20% in test cases involving accesses to fields of "record" variables. The fact that values of such variables can now be exposed to the planner might produce wins in some situations, too, but I've not pursued that angle. In passing, remove the "parent" pointer from the arguments to ExecInitExprRec and related functions, instead storing that pointer in a transient field in ExprState. The ParamListInfo pointer for a stand-alone expression is handled the same way; we'd otherwise have had to add yet another recursively-passed-down argument in expression compilation. By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding left parenthesis. However, traditionally, if that resulted in the continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin, then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin, if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of the current statement indent. That makes for a weird mix of indentations unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column limit. This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers. Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren. This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects. For example, "lfirst_node(Foo, lc)" is the same as "castNode(Foo, lfirst(lc))". Almost half of the uses of castNode that have appeared so far include a list extraction call, so this is pretty widely useful, and it saves a few more keystrokes compared to the old way. At this point, the only thing implemented is a collection of EphemeralNamedRelation objects -- relations which can be referenced by name in queries, but do not exist in the catalogs. The only type of ENR implemented is NamedTuplestore, but provision is made to add more types fairly easily. An ENR can carry its own TupleDesc or reference a relation in the catalogs by relid. Although these features can be used without SPI, convenience functions are added to SPI so that ENRs can easily be used by code run through SPI. The initial use of all this is going to be transition tables in AFTER triggers, but that will be added to each PL as a separate commit. An incidental effect of this patch is to produce a more informative error message if an attempt is made to modify the contents of a CTE from a referencing DML statement. No tests previously covered that possibility, so one is added. If the compiler supports typeof or something similar, cast the result to the input type. This creates a greater amount of type safety. In some cases, where the result is assigned to a generic type such as Node * or Expr *, new casts are now necessary, but in general casts are now unnecessary in the normal case and indicate that something unusual is happening. Projection is now implemented as part of expression evaluation. This both leads to significant performance improvements, and makes future just-in-time compilation of expressions easier. The speed gains primarily come from: - non-recursive implementation reduces stack usage / overhead - simple sub-expressions are implemented with a single jump, without function calls - sharing some state between different sub-expressions - reduced amount of indirect/hard to predict memory accesses by laying out operation metadata sequentially; including the avoidance of nearly all of the previously used linked lists - more code has been moved to expression initialization, avoiding constant re-checks at evaluation time Future just-in-time compilation (JIT) has become easier, as demonstrated by released patches intended to be merged in a later release, for primarily two reasons: Firstly, due to a stricter split between expression initialization and evaluation, less code has to be handled by the JIT. Secondly, due to the non-recursive nature of the generated "instructions", less performance-critical code-paths can easily be shared between interpreted and compiled evaluation. The new framework allows for significant future optimizations. E.g.: - basic infrastructure for to later reduce the per executor-startup overhead of expression evaluation, by caching state in prepared statements. That'd be helpful in OLTPish scenarios where initialization overhead is measurable. - optimizing the generated "code". A number of proposals for potential work has already been made. - optimizing the interpreter. Similarly a number of proposals have been made here too. The move of logic into the expression initialization step leads to some backward-incompatible changes: - Function permission checks are now done during expression initialization, whereas previously they were done during execution. In edge cases this can lead to errors being raised that previously wouldn't have been, e.g. a NULL array being coerced to a different array type previously didn't perform checks. - The set of domain constraints to be checked, is now evaluated once during expression initialization, previously it was re-built every time a domain check was evaluated. For normal queries this doesn't change much, but e.g. for plpgsql functions, which caches ExprStates, the old set could stick around longer. The behavior around might still change. However, it's quite easy to fix things up so that we can support that case, provided that it is known that we will never call ExecutorRun() a second time for the same QueryDesc. Add infrastructure to signal this, and cross-checks to make sure that a caller who claims this is true doesn't later reneg. While that pattern never happens with queries received directly from a client -- there's no way to know whether multiple Execute messages will be sent unless the first one requests all the rows -- it's pretty common for queries originating from procedural languages, which often limit the result to a single tuple or to a user-specified number of tuples. This commit doesn't actually enable parallelism in any additional cases, because currently none of the places that would be able to benefit from this infrastructure pass CURSOR_OPT_PARALLEL_OK in the first place, but it makes it much more palatable to pass CURSOR_OPT_PARALLEL_OK in places where we currently don't, because it eliminates some cases where we'd end up having to run the parallel plan serially. This required including datatype/timestamp.h in a couple more places than before. I decided it would be a good idea to slim down that header by not having it pull in <float.h> etc, as those headers are no longer at all relevant to its purpose. Unsurprisingly, a small number of .c files turn out to have been depending on those inclusions, so add them back in the .c files as needed. It's probably not all that significant, but there are more assertions here than there were before, and conceivably they will help catch any bugs associated with those representation changes. I left behind a number of usages like "(Query *) copyObject(query_var)". Those could have been converted as well, but Peter has proposed another notational improvement that would handle copyObject cases automatically, so I let that be for now.

It's always been the case that the output of parse analysis is a list of Query nodes, whatever the types of the individual statements in the list. This patch brings similar consistency to the outputs of raw parsing and planning steps: * The output of raw parsing is now always a list of RawStmt nodes; the statement-type-dependent nodes are one level down from that. * The output of pg_plan_queries() is now always a list of PlannedStmt nodes, even for utility statements. In the case of a utility statement, "planning" just consists of wrapping a CMD_UTILITY PlannedStmt around the utility node. This list representation is now used in Portal and CachedPlan plan lists, replacing the former convention of intermixing PlannedStmts with bare utility-statement nodes. Now, every list of statements has a consistent head-node type depending on how far along it is in processing. This allows changing many places that formerly used generic "Node *" pointers to use a more specific pointer type, thus reducing the number of IsA() tests and casts needed, as well as improving code clarity. Also, the post-parse-analysis representation of DECLARE CURSOR is changed so that it looks more like EXPLAIN, PREPARE, etc. That is, the contained SELECT remains a child of the DeclareCursorStmt rather than getting flipped around to be the other way. It's now true for both Query and PlannedStmt that utilityStmt is non-null if and only if commandType is CMD_UTILITY. That allows simplifying a lot of places that were testing both fields. (I think some of those were just defensive programming, but in many places, it was actually necessary to avoid confusing DECLARE CURSOR with SELECT.) Because PlannedStmt carries a canSetTag field, we're also able to get rid of some ad-hoc rules about how to reconstruct canSetTag for a bare utility statement; specifically, the assumption that a utility is canSetTag if and only if it's the only one in its list. While I see no near-term need for relaxing that restriction, it's nice to get rid of the ad-hocery. The API of ProcessUtility() is changed so that what it's passed is the wrapper PlannedStmt not just the bare utility statement. This will affect all users of ProcessUtility_hook, but the changes are pretty trivial; see the affected contrib modules for examples of the minimum change needed. (Most compilers should give pointer-type-mismatch warnings for uncorrected code.) There's also a change in the API of ExplainOneQuery_hook, to pass through cursorOptions instead of expecting hook functions to know what to pick. This is needed because of the DECLARE CURSOR changes, but really should have been done in 9.6; it's unlikely that any extant hook functions know about using CURSOR_OPT_PARALLEL_OK. Finally, teach gram.y to save statement boundary locations in RawStmt nodes, and pass those through to Query and PlannedStmt nodes. This allows more intelligent handling of cases where a source query string contains multiple statements. This patch doesn't actually do anything with the information, but a follow-on patch will. (Passing this information through cleanly is the true motivation for these changes; while I think this is all good cleanup, it's unlikely we'd have bothered without this end goal.) catversion bump because addition of location fields to struct Query affects stored rules. This state of affairs was due to confusion on my (rhaas) part: I erroneously believed that a CREATE TABLE .. AS EXECUTE statement could only be performed with a prepared statement by PREPARE, but in fact one created by a Prepare message works just as well. Therefore, it makes no sense to allow parallel query in one case but not the other. To fix, allow parallel query with all prepared statements, but run the parallel plan serially (i.e. without workers) in the case of CREATE TABLE .. AS EXECUTE. Also, document this. However, there seems to be no way to run a statement prepared via SQL PREPARE other than to completion, so we can enable it there without a problem. The situation is more complicated for the extend query protocol. libpq seems to provide no way to send an Execute message with a non-zero rowcount, but some other client might. If that happens, and a parallel plan was chosen, we'll execute the parallel plan without using any workers, which may be somewhat inefficient but should still work. Hopefully this won't be a problem; users can always set max_parallel_degree=0 to avoid choosing parallel plans in the first place. Amit Kapila, reviewed by me.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit d1b7c1ffe72e86932b5395f29e006c3f503bc53d introduced a mechanism for serializing a ParamListInfo structure to be passed to a parallel worker. However, this mechanism failed to handle external expanded values, as pointed out by Noah Misch. Repair. Moreover, plpgsql_param_fetch requires adjustment because the serialization mechanism needs it to skip evaluating unused parameters just as we would do when it is called from copyParamList, but params == estate->paramLI in that case. To fix, make the bms_is_member test in that function unconditional. Finally, have setup_param_list set a new ParamListInfo field, paramMask, to the parameters actually used in the expression, so that we don't try to fetch those that are not needed when serializing a parameter list. This isn't necessary for correctness, but it makes the performance of the parallel executor code comparable to what we do for cases involving cursors. Aside from being more self-documenting, this should help prevent bogus warnings from static code analyzers and perhaps compiler misoptimizations. This patch is just a down payment on eliminating the whole problem, but it gets rid of a lot of easy-to-fix cases. Note that the main problem with doing this is that one must no longer rely on computing sizeof(the containing struct), since the result would be compiler-dependent. The reason for these appears to have been principally some ill-considered choices around having intorel_startup do what ought to be parse-time checking, plus a poor arrangement for passing it the view parsetree it needs to store into pg_rewrite when creating a materialized view. Do the latter by having parse analysis stick a copy into the IntoClause, instead of doing it at runtime. (On the whole, I seriously question the choice to represent CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW as a variant of SELECT INTO/CREATE TABLE AS, because that means injecting even more complexity into what was already a horrid legacy kluge. However, I didn't go so far as to rethink that choice ... yet.) I also moved several error checks into matview parse analysis, and made the check for external Params in a matview more accurate. In passing, clean things up a bit more around interpretOidsOption(), and fix things so that we can use that to force no-oids for views, sequences, etc, thereby eliminating the need to cons up "oids = false" options when creating them. catversion bump due to change in IntoClause. (I wonder though if we really need readfuncs/outfuncs support for IntoClause anymore.)

The rule is only used to populate the table, references in queries refer to the materialized data. This is a minimal implementation, but should still be useful in many cases. Currently data is only populated "on demand" by the CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW and REFRESH MATERIALIZED VIEW statements. It is expected that future releases will add incremental updates with various timings, and that a more refined concept of defining what is "fresh" data will be developed. At some point it may even be possible to have queries use a materialized in place of references to underlying tables, but that requires the other above-mentioned features to be working first. While that seemed like a good idea at the time, it caused execution to use a snapshot that had been acquired before locking any of the tables mentioned in the query. This created user-visible anomalies that were not present in any prior release of Postgres, as reported by Tomas Vondra. While this whole area could do with a redesign (since there are related cases that have anomalies anyway), it doesn't seem likely that any future patch would be reasonably back-patchable; and we don't want 9.2 to exhibit a behavior that's subtly unlike either past or future releases. Hence, revert to prior code while we rethink the problem.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Formerly we relied on checking after-the-fact to see if an expression contained aggregates, window functions, or sub-selects when it shouldn't. This is grotty, easily forgotten (indeed, we had forgotten to teach DefineIndex about rejecting window functions), and none too efficient since it requires extra traversals of the parse tree. To improve matters, define an enum type that classifies all SQL sub-expressions, store it in ParseState to show what kind of expression we are currently parsing, and make transformAggregateCall, transformWindowFuncCall, and transformSubLink check the expression type and throw error if the type indicates the construct is disallowed. This allows removal of a large number of ad-hoc checks scattered around the code base. The enum type is sufficiently fine-grained that we can still produce error messages of at least the same specificity as before. Bringing these error checks together revealed that we'd been none too consistent about phrasing of the error messages, so standardize the wording a bit. Also, rewrite checking of aggregate arguments so that it requires only one traversal of the arguments, rather than up to three as before. In passing, clean up some more comments left over from add_missing_from support, and annotate some tests that I think are dead code now that that's gone. (I didn't risk actually removing said dead code, though.)

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Making this operation look like a utility statement seems generally a good idea, and particularly so in light of the desire to provide command triggers for utility statements. The original choice of representing it as SELECT with an IntoClause appendage had metastasized into rather a lot of places, unfortunately, so that this patch is a great deal more complicated than one might at first expect. In particular, keeping EXPLAIN working for SELECT INTO and CREATE TABLE AS subcommands required restructuring some EXPLAIN-related APIs. Add-on code that calls ExplainOnePlan or ExplainOneUtility, or uses ExplainOneQuery_hook, will need adjustment. Also, the cases PREPARE ... SELECT INTO and CREATE RULE ... SELECT INTO, which formerly were accepted though undocumented, are no longer accepted. The PREPARE case can be replaced with use of CREATE TABLE AS EXECUTE. The CREATE RULE case doesn't seem to have much real-world use (since the rule would work only once before failing with "table already exists"), so we'll not bother with that one. Both SELECT INTO and CREATE TABLE AS still return a command tag of "SELECT nnnn". There was some discussion of returning "CREATE TABLE nnnn", but for the moment backwards compatibility wins the day. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When a PORTAL_ONE_SELECT query is executed, we can opportunistically reuse the parse/plan shot for the execution phase. This cuts down the number of snapshots per simple query from 2 to 1 for the simple protocol, and 3 to 2 for the extended protocol. Since we are only reusing a snapshot taken early in the processing of the same protocol message, the change shouldn't be user-visible, except that the remote possibility of the planning and execution snapshots being different is eliminated. Note that this change does not make it safe to assume that the parse/plan snapshot will certainly be reused; that will currently only happen if PortalStart() decides to use the PORTAL_ONE_SELECT strategy. It might be worth trying to provide some stronger guarantees here in the future, but for now we don't. Patch by me; review by Dimitri Fontaine.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Rewrite plancache.c so that a "cached plan" (which is rather a misnomer at this point) can support generation of custom, parameter-value-dependent plans, and can make an intelligent choice between using custom plans and the traditional generic-plan approach. The specific choice algorithm implemented here can probably be improved in future, but this commit is all about getting the mechanism in place, not the policy. In addition, restructure the API to greatly reduce the amount of extraneous data copying needed. The main compromise needed to make that possible was to split the initial creation of a CachedPlanSource into two steps. It's worth noting in particular that SPI_saveplan is now deprecated in favor of SPI_keepplan, which accomplishes the same end result with zero data copying, and no need to then spend even more cycles throwing away the original SPIPlan. The risk of long-term memory leaks while manipulating SPIPlans has also been greatly reduced. Most of this improvement is based on use of the recently-added MemoryContextSetParent primitive.

Also, nodes that can invoke collation-aware functions store a separate field that is the collation value to pass to the function. This avoids confusion that arises when a function has collatable inputs and noncollatable output type, or vice versa. Also, replace the parser's on-the-fly collation assignment method with a post-pass over the completed expression tree. This allows us to use a more complex (and hopefully more nearly spec-compliant) assignment rule without paying for it in extra storage in every expression node. Fix assorted bugs in the planner's handling of collations by making collation one of the defining properties of an EquivalenceClass and by converting CollateExprs into discardable RelabelType nodes during expression preprocessing.

Although there's a lot left to be done in plpgsql, this already cures the "if (TG_OP = 'INSERT' and NEW.foo ...)" problem, as illustrated by the changed regression test.
