The previous method was hard to understand and could never be extended to handle parameters coming from multiple join levels. This patch doesn't change the set of possible plans nor have any significant performance effect, but it's necessary infrastructure for future generalization of the concept of an inner indexscan plan. ExecReScan's second parameter is now unused, so it's removed.

Should think about using the general Param mechanism to pass down outer-relation variables, but for the moment we need a back-patchable solution. Per report from Phil Frost.
* Repair oversight in 8.2 change that improved the handling of "pseudoconstant"Tom Lane2007-02-15
| | | | | | | | | WHERE clauses. createplan.c is now willing to stick a gating Result node almost anywhere in the plan tree, and in particular one can wind up directly underneath a MergeJoin node. This means it had better be willing to handle Mark/Restore. Fortunately, that's trivial in such cases, since we can just pass off the call to the input node (which the planner has previously ensured can handle Mark/Restore). Per report from Phil Frost.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | made query plan. Use of ALTER COLUMN TYPE creates a hazard for cached query plans: they could contain Vars that claim a column has a different type than it now has. Fix this by checking during plan startup that Vars at relation scan level match the current relation tuple descriptor. Since at that point we already have at least AccessShareLock, we can be sure the column type will not change underneath us later in the query. However, since a backend's locks do not conflict against itself, there is still a hole for an attacker to exploit: he could try to execute ALTER COLUMN TYPE while a query is in progress in the current backend. Seal that hole by rejecting ALTER TABLE whenever the target relation is already open in the current backend. This is a significant security hole: not only can one trivially crash the backend, but with appropriate misuse of pass-by-reference datatypes it is possible to read out arbitrary locations in the server process's memory, which could allow retrieving database content the user should not be able to see. Our thanks to Jeff Trout for the initial report. Security: CVE-2007-0556

* Repair bug #2839: the various ExecReScan functions need to resetTom Lane2006-12-26
| | | | | | | | | ps_TupFromTlist in plan nodes that make use of it. This was being done correctly in join nodes and Result nodes but not in any relation-scan nodes. Bug would lead to bogus results if a set-returning function appeared in the targetlist of a subquery that could be rescanned after partial execution, for example a subquery within EXISTS(). Bug has been around forever :-( ... surprising it wasn't reported before.

* Extend the ExecInitNode API so that plan nodes receive a set of flagTom Lane2006-02-28
| | | | | | | | | | | | bits indicating which optional capabilities can actually be exercised at runtime. This will allow Sort and Material nodes, and perhaps later other nodes, to avoid unnecessary overhead in common cases. This commit just adds the infrastructure and arranges to pass the correct flag values down to plan nodes; none of the actual optimizations are here yet. I'm committing this separately in case anyone wants to measure the added overhead. (It should be negligible.) Simon Riggs and Tom Lane

* Revise executor APIs so that all per-query state structure is built inTom Lane2002-12-15
| | | | | | a per-query memory context created by CreateExecutorState --- and destroyed by FreeExecutorState. This provides a final solution to the longstanding problem of memory leaked by various ExecEndNode calls.
* Phase 3 of read-only-plans project: ExecInitExpr now builds expressionTom Lane2002-12-13
| | | | | | | execution state trees, and ExecEvalExpr takes an expression state tree not an expression plan tree. The plan tree is now read-only as far as the executor is concerned. Next step is to begin actually exploiting this property.
* Phase 1 of read-only-plans project: cause executor state nodes to pointTom Lane2002-12-05
| | | | | | | | | | to plan nodes, not vice-versa. All executor state nodes now inherit from struct PlanState. Copying of plan trees has been simplified by not storing a list of SubPlans in Plan nodes (eliminating duplicate links). The executor still needs such a list, but it can build it during ExecutorStart since it has to scan the plan tree anyway. No initdb forced since no stored-on-disk structures changed, but you will need a full recompile because of node-numbering changes.

* SQL-language functions are now callable in ordinary fmgr contexts ...Tom Lane2000-08-24

* Revise aggregate functions per earlier discussions in pghackers.Tom Lane2000-07-17
| | | | | | | | | | | There's now only one transition value and transition function. NULL handling in aggregates is a lot cleaner. Also, use Numeric accumulators instead of integer accumulators for sum/avg on integer datatypes --- this avoids overflow at the cost of being a little slower. Implement VARIANCE() and STDDEV() aggregates in the standard backend. Also, enable new LIKE selectivity estimators by default. Unrelated change, but as long as I had to force initdb anyway...
* First stage of reclaiming memory in executor by resetting short-termTom Lane2000-07-12

* Fix handling of NULL constraint conditions: per SQL92 spec, a NULL resultTom Lane2000-01-19
| | | | | | | | | from a constraint condition does not violate the constraint (cf. discussion on pghackers 12/9/99). Implemented by adding a parameter to ExecQual, specifying whether to return TRUE or FALSE when the qual result is really NULL in three-valued boolean logic. Currently, ExecRelCheck is the only caller that asks for TRUE, but if we find any other places that have the wrong response to NULL, it'll be easy to fix them.
