* Add postgres_fdw contrib module.Tom Lane2013-02-21
| | | | | | | | There's still a lot of room for improvement, but it basically works, and we need this to be present before we can do anything much with the writable-foreign-tables patch. So let's commit it and get on with testing. Shigeru Hanada, reviewed by KaiGai Kohei and Tom Lane

| | | | | Fully update git head, and update back branches in ./COPYRIGHT and legal.sgml files.
* Split tuple struct defs from htup.h to htup_details.hAlvaro Herrera2012-08-30
| | | | | | | | | | | | This reduces unnecessary exposure of other headers through htup.h, which is very widely included by many files. I have chosen to move the function prototypes to the new file as well, because that means htup.h no longer needs to include tupdesc.h. In itself this doesn't have much effect in indirect inclusion of tupdesc.h throughout the tree, because it's also required by execnodes.h; but it's something to explore in the future, and it seemed best to do the htup.h change now while I'm busy with it.
* Split heapam_xlog.h from heapam.hAlvaro Herrera2012-08-28
| | | | | | | | | | | | The heapam XLog functions are used by other modules, not all of which are interested in the rest of the heapam API. With this, we let them get just the XLog stuff in which they are interested and not pollute them with unrelated includes. Also, since heapam.h no longer requires xlog.h, many files that do include heapam.h no longer get xlog.h automatically, including a few headers. This is useful because heapam.h is getting pulled in by execnodes.h, which is in turn included by a lot of files.
* Add GetForeignColumnOptions() to foreign.c, and add some documentation.Tom Lane2012-03-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | GetForeignColumnOptions provides some abstraction for accessing column-specific FDW options, on a par with the access functions that were already provided here for other FDW-related information. Adjust file_fdw.c to use GetForeignColumnOptions instead of equivalent hand-rolled code. In addition, add some SGML documentation for the functions exported by foreign.c that are meant for use by FDW authors. (This is the fdw_helper portion of the proposed pgsql_fdw patch.) * deflist_to_tuplestore dumped core on an option with no value.Tom Lane2011-09-13
| | | | | | | Make it return NULL for the option_value, instead. Per report from Frank van Vugt. Back-patch to 8.4 where this code was added.

* Clean up most -Wunused-but-set-variable warnings from gcc 4.6Peter Eisentraut2011-04-11
| | | | | | This warning is new in gcc 4.6 and part of -Wall. This patch cleans up most of the noise, but there are some still warnings that are trickier to remove.
* Support comments on FOREIGN DATA WRAPPER and SERVER objects.Robert Haas2011-04-01
| | | | | | | | | | This mostly involves making it work with the objectaddress.c framework, which does most of the heavy lifting. In that vein, change GetForeignDataWrapperOidByName to get_foreign_data_wrapper_oid and GetForeignServerOidByName to get_foreign_server_oid, to match the pattern we use for other object types. * Implement an API to let foreign-data wrappers actually be functional.Tom Lane2011-02-20
| | | | | | | This commit provides the core code and documentation needed. A contrib module test case will follow shortly. Shigeru Hanada, Jan Urbanski, Heikki Linnakangas
* Create the catalog infrastructure for foreign-data-wrapper handlers.Tom Lane2011-02-19
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add a fdwhandler column to pg_foreign_data_wrapper, plus HANDLER options in the CREATE FOREIGN DATA WRAPPER and ALTER FOREIGN DATA WRAPPER commands, plus pg_dump support for same. Also invent a new pseudotype fdw_handler with properties similar to language_handler. This is split out of the "FDW API" patch for ease of review; it's all stuff we will certainly need, regardless of any other details of the FDW API. FDW handler functions will not actually get called yet. In passing, fix some omissions and infelicities in foreigncmds.c. Shigeru Hanada, Jan Urbanski, Heikki Linnakangas

* Wrap calls to SearchSysCache and related functions using macros.Robert Haas2010-02-14
| | | | | | | | | | | | The purpose of this change is to eliminate the need for every caller of SearchSysCache, SearchSysCacheCopy, SearchSysCacheExists, GetSysCacheOid, and SearchSysCacheList to know the maximum number of allowable keys for a syscache entry (currently 4). This will make it far easier to increase the maximum number of keys in a future release should we choose to do so, and it makes the code shorter, too. Design and review by Tom Lane.

* Always pass catalog id to the options validator function specified inHeikki Linnakangas2009-12-23
| | | | | | | | | | | CREATE FOREIGN DATA WRAPPER. Arguably it wasn't a bug because the documentation said that it's passed the catalog ID or zero, but surely we should provide it when it's known. And there isn't currently any scenario where it's not known, and I can't imagine having one in the future either, so better remove the "or zero" escape hatch and always pass a valid catalog ID. Backpatch to 8.4. Martin Pihlak

This doesn't do any remote or external things yet, but it gives modules like plproxy and dblink a standardized and future-proof system for managing their connection information. Martin Pihlak and Peter Eisentraut
