If a given relfilenode received both a WAL-skipping COPY and a WAL-logged operation (e.g. INSERT), recovery could lose tuples from the COPY. See src/backend/access/transam/README section "Skipping WAL for New RelFileNode" for the new coding rules. Maintainers of table access methods should examine that section. To maintain data durability, just before commit, we choose between an fsync of the relfilenode and copying its contents to WAL. A new GUC, wal_skip_threshold, guides that choice. If this change slows a workload that creates small, permanent relfilenodes under wal_level=minimal, try adjusting wal_skip_threshold. Users setting a timeout on COMMIT may need to adjust that timeout, and log_min_duration_statement analysis will reflect time consumption moving to COMMIT from commands like COPY. Internally, this requires a reliable determination of whether RollbackAndReleaseCurrentSubTransaction() would unlink a relation's current relfilenode. Introduce rd_firstRelfilenodeSubid. Amend the specification of rd_createSubid such that the field is zero when a new rel has an old rd_node. Make relcache.c retain entries for certain dropped relations until end of transaction. Back-patch to 9.5 (all supported versions). This introduces a new WAL record type, XLOG_GIST_ASSIGN_LSN, without bumping XLOG_PAGE_MAGIC. As always, update standby systems before master systems. This changes sizeof(RelationData) and sizeof(IndexStmt), breaking binary compatibility for affected extensions. (The most recent commit to affect the same class of extensions was 089e4d405d0f3b94c74a2c6a54357a84a681754b.) Kyotaro Horiguchi, reviewed (in earlier, similar versions) by Robert Haas. Heikki Linnakangas and Michael Paquier implemented earlier designs that materially clarified the problem. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Relations dropped in a single transaction are tracked in a list of unowned relations. With large number of dropped relations this resulted in poor performance at the end of a transaction, when the relations are removed from the singly linked list one by one. Commit b4166911 attempted to address this issue (particularly when it happens during recovery) by removing the relations in a reverse order, resulting in O(1) lookups in the list of unowned relations. This did not work reliably, though, and it was possible to trigger the O(N^2) behavior in various ways. Instead of trying to remove the relations in a specific order with respect to the linked list, which seems rather fragile, switch to a regular doubly linked. That allows us to remove relations cheaply no matter where in the list they are. As b4166911 was a bugfix, backpatched to all supported versions, do the same thing here. By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding left parenthesis. However, traditionally, if that resulted in the continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin, then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin, if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of the current statement indent. That makes for a weird mix of indentations unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column limit. This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers. Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren. This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Change pg_bsd_indent to follow upstream rules for placement of comments to the right of code, and remove pgindent hack that caused comments following #endif to not obey the general rule. Commit e3860ffa4dd0dad0dd9eea4be9cc1412373a8c89 wasn't actually using the published version of pg_bsd_indent, but a hacked-up version that tried to minimize the amount of movement of comments to the right of code. The situation of interest is where such a comment has to be moved to the right of its default placement at column 33 because there's code there. BSD indent has always moved right in units of tab stops in such cases --- but in the previous incarnation, indent was working in 8-space tab stops, while now it knows we use 4-space tabs. So the net result is that in about half the cases, such comments are placed one tab stop left of before. This is better all around: it leaves more room on the line for comment text, and it means that in such cases the comment uniformly starts at the next 4-space tab stop after the code, rather than sometimes one and sometimes two tabs after. Also, ensure that comments following #endif are indented the same as comments following other preprocessor commands such as #else. That inconsistency turns out to have been self-inflicted damage from a poorly-thought-through post-indent "fixup" in pgindent. This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects. The main changes visible in this commit are: * Nicer formatting of function-pointer declarations. * No longer unexpectedly removes spaces in expressions using casts, sizeof, or offsetof. * No longer wants to add a space in "struct structname *varname", as well as some similar cases for const- or volatile-qualified pointers. * Declarations using PG_USED_FOR_ASSERTS_ONLY are formatted more nicely. * Fixes bug where comments following declarations were sometimes placed with no space separating them from the code. * Fixes some odd decisions for comments following case labels. * Fixes some cases where comments following code were indented to less than the expected column 33. On the less good side, it now tends to put more whitespace around typedef names that are not listed in typedefs.list. This might encourage us to put more effort into typedef name collection; it's not really a bug in indent itself. There are more changes coming after this round, having to do with comment indentation and alignment of lines appearing within parentheses. I wanted to limit the size of the diffs to something that could be reviewed without one's eyes completely glazing over, so it seemed better to split up the changes as much as practical. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently writes to the main data files of postgres all go through the OS page cache. This means that some operating systems can end up collecting a large number of dirty buffers in their respective page caches. When these dirty buffers are flushed to storage rapidly, be it because of fsync(), timeouts, or dirty ratios, latency for other reads and writes can increase massively. This is the primary reason for regular massive stalls observed in real world scenarios and artificial benchmarks; on rotating disks stalls on the order of hundreds of seconds have been observed. On linux it is possible to control this by reducing the global dirty limits significantly, reducing the above problem. But global configuration is rather problematic because it'll affect other applications; also PostgreSQL itself doesn't always generally want this behavior, e.g. for temporary files it's undesirable. Several operating systems allow some control over the kernel page cache. Linux has sync_file_range(2), several posix systems have msync(2) and posix_fadvise(2). sync_file_range(2) is preferable because it requires no special setup, whereas msync() requires the to-be-flushed range to be mmap'ed. For the purpose of flushing dirty data posix_fadvise(2) is the worst alternative, as flushing dirty data is just a side-effect of POSIX_FADV_DONTNEED, which also removes the pages from the page cache. Thus the feature is enabled by default only on linux, but can be enabled on all systems that have any of the above APIs. While desirable and likely possible this patch does not contain an implementation for windows. With the infrastructure added, writes made via checkpointer, bgwriter and normal user backends can be flushed after a configurable number of writes. Each of these sources of writes controlled by a separate GUC, checkpointer_flush_after, bgwriter_flush_after and backend_flush_after respectively; they're separate because the number of flushes that are good are separate, and because the performance considerations of controlled flushing for each of these are different. A later patch will add checkpoint sorting - after that flushes from the ckeckpoint will almost always be desirable. Bgwriter flushes are most of the time going to be random, which are slow on lots of storage hardware. Flushing in backends works well if the storage and bgwriter can keep up, but if not it can have negative consequences. This patch is likely to have negative performance consequences without checkpoint sorting, but unfortunately so has sorting without flush control. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Previously, if you wanted anything besides C-string hash keys, you had to specify a custom hashing function to hash_create(). Nearly all such callers were specifying tag_hash or oid_hash; which is tedious, and rather error-prone, since a caller could easily miss the opportunity to optimize by using hash_uint32 when appropriate. Replace this with a design whereby callers using simple binary-data keys just specify HASH_BLOBS and don't need to mess with specific support functions. hash_create() itself will take care of optimizing when the key size is four bytes. This nets out saving a few hundred bytes of code space, and offers a measurable performance improvement in tidbitmap.c (which was not exploiting the opportunity to use hash_uint32 for its 4-byte keys). There might be some wins elsewhere too, I didn't analyze closely. In future we could look into offering a similar optimized hashing function for 8-byte keys. Under this design that could be done in a centralized and machine-independent fashion, whereas getting it right for keys of platform-dependent sizes would've been notationally painful before. For the moment, the old way still works fine, so as not to break source code compatibility for loadable modules. Eventually we might want to remove tag_hash and friends from the exported API altogether, since there's no real need for them to be explicitly referenced from outside dynahash.c. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When relations are dropped, at end of transaction we need to remove the files and clean the buffer pool of buffers containing pages of those relations. Previously we would scan the buffer pool once per relation to clean up buffers. When there are many relations to drop, the repeated scans make this process slow; so we now instead pass a list of relations to drop and scan the pool once, checking each buffer against the passed list. When the number of relations is larger than a threshold (which as of this patch is being set to 20 relations) we sort the array before starting, and bsearch the array; when it's smaller, we simply scan the array linearly each time, because that's faster. The exact optimal threshold value depends on many factors, but the difference is not likely to be significant enough to justify making it user-settable. This has been measured to be a significant win (a 15x win when dropping 100,000 relations; an extreme case, but reportedly a real one). Because an SMgrRelation typically corresponds to open file descriptors at the fd.c level, leaving it open when there's no corresponding relcache entry can mean that we prevent the kernel from reclaiming deleted disk space. (While CacheInvalidateSmgr messages usually fix that, there are cases where they're not issued, such as DROP DATABASE. We might want to add some more sinval messaging for that, but I'd be inclined to keep this type of logic anyway, since allowing VFDs to accumulate indefinitely for blind-written relations doesn't seem like a good idea.) This code replaces a previous attempt towards the same goal that proved to be unreliable. Back-patch to 9.1 where the previous patch was added.

(Actually, the inclusion was circular until a couple hours ago, which was even sillier; but Bruce broke it in the expedient rather than logically correct direction.) Because of that poor decision, plus blind application of pgrminclude, we had a situation where half the system was depending on xlog.h to include such unrelated stuff as array.h and guc.h. Clean up the header inclusion, and manually revert a lot of what pgrminclude had done so things build again. This episode reinforces my feeling that pgrminclude should not be run without adult supervision. Inclusion changes in header files in particular need to be reviewed with great care. More generally, it'd be good if we had a clearer notion of module layering to dictate which headers can sanely include which others ... but that's a big task for another day.

We were keeping those files open indefinitely, which would cause a problem if the underlying table was deleted, because the operating system would not be able to reclaim the disk space used by those files. To fix, have bufmgr mark such files as transient to smgr; the lower layer is allowed to close the file descriptor when the current transaction ends. We must be careful to have any other access of the file to remove the transient markings, to prevent unnecessary expensive system calls when evicting buffers belonging to our own database (which files we're likely to require again soon.) This commit fixes a bug in the previous one, which neglected to cleanly handle the LRU ring that fd.c uses to manage open files, and caused an unacceptable failure just before beta2 and was thus reverted.

It would be possible to remove these restrictions by increasing the size of SharedInvalidationMessage by 4 bytes, but right now that doesn't seem like a good trade-off. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Move rd_targblock, rd_fsm_nblocks, and rd_vm_nblocks from relcache to the smgr relation entries, so that they will get reset to InvalidBlockNumber whenever an smgr-level flush happens. Because we now send smgr invalidation messages immediately (not at end of transaction) when a relation truncation occurs, this ensures that other backends will reset their values before they next access the relation. We no longer need the unreliable assumption that a VACUUM that's doing a truncation will hold its AccessExclusive lock until commit --- in fact, we can intentionally release that lock as soon as we've completed the truncation. This patch therefore reverts (most of) Alvaro's patch of 2009-11-10, as well as my marginal hacking on it yesterday. We can also get rid of assorted no-longer-needed relcache flushes, which are far more expensive than an smgr flush because they kill a lot more state. In passing this patch fixes smgr_redo's failure to perform visibility-map truncation, and cleans up some rather dubious assumptions in freespace.c and visibilitymap.c about when rd_fsm_nblocks and rd_vm_nblocks can be out of date.

Get rid of inval.c's dependency on relfilenode, by not having it emit smgr invalidations as a result of relcache flushes. Instead, smgr sinval messages are sent directly from smgr.c when an actual relation delete or truncate is done. This makes considerably more structural sense and allows elimination of a large number of useless smgr inval messages that were formerly sent even in cases where nothing was changing at the physical-relation level. Note that this reintroduces the concept of nontransactional inval messages, but that's okay --- because the messages are sent by smgr.c, they will be sent in Hot Standby slaves, just from a lower logical level than before. 2. Move setNewRelfilenode out of catalog/index.c, where it never logically belonged, into relcache.c; which is a somewhat debatable choice as well but better than before. (I considered catalog/storage.c, but that seemed too low level.) Rename to RelationSetNewRelfilenode. 3. Cosmetic cleanups of some other relfilenode manipulations.

To make that cleaner from modularity point of view, move the WAL-logging one level up to RelationTruncate, and move RelationTruncate and all the related WAL-logging to new src/backend/catalog/storage.c file. Introduce new RelationCreateStorage and RelationDropStorage functions that are used instead of calling smgrcreate/smgrscheduleunlink directly. Move the pending rel deletion stuff from smgrcreate/smgrscheduleunlink to the new functions. This leaves smgr.c as a thin wrapper around md.c; all the transactional stuff is now in storage.c. This will make it easier to add new forks with similar truncation logic, like the visibility map.

The bulk of this patch is about changing the smgr API to include an extra ForkNumber argument in every smgr function. Also, smgrscheduleunlink and smgrdounlink no longer implicitly call smgrclose, because other forks might still exist after unlinking one. The callers of those functions have been modified to call smgrclose instead. This patch in itself doesn't have any user-visible effect, but provides the infrastructure needed for upcoming patches. The additional forks envisioned are a rewritten FSM implementation that doesn't rely on a fixed-size shared memory block, and a visibility map to allow skipping portions of a table in VACUUM that have no dead tuples.
