The scheme preserves the property that TOAST tables are not in any schema that's normally in the search path, so they don't conflict with user table names. initdb forced because of changes in system view definitions.

This will allow replication systems like Slony-I and, as has been stated on pgsql-hackers, other products to control the firing mechanism of triggers and rewrite rules without modifying the system catalog directly. The firing mechanisms are controlled by a new superuser-only GUC variable, session_replication_role, together with a change to pg_trigger.tgenabled and a new column pg_rewrite.ev_enabled. Both columns are a single char data type now (tgenabled was a bool before). The possible values in these attributes are: 'O' - Trigger/Rule fires when session_replication_role is "origin" (default) or "local". This is the default behavior. 'D' - Trigger/Rule is disabled and fires never 'A' - Trigger/Rule fires always regardless of the setting of session_replication_role 'R' - Trigger/Rule fires when session_replication_role is "replica" The GUC variable can only be changed as long as the system does not have any cached query plans. This will prevent changing the session role and accidentally executing stored procedures or functions that have plans cached that expand to the wrong query set due to differences in the rule firing semantics. The SQL syntax for changing a triggers/rules firing semantics is ALTER TABLE <tabname> <when> TRIGGER|RULE <name>; <when> ::= ENABLE | ENABLE ALWAYS | ENABLE REPLICA | DISABLE psql's \d command as well as pg_dump are extended in a backward compatible fashion. In particular this responds to the concerns we had about eliminating the special-purpose hack that exprTypmod() used to have for BPCHAR Consts. We can now tell whether or not such a Const has been cast to a specific length, and report or display properly if so. initdb forced due to changes in stored rules.

Along the way, clean up SPI's API a little bit by declaring SPI plan pointers as "SPIPlanPtr" instead of "void *". This is cosmetic but helps to forestall simple programming mistakes. (I have changed some but not all of the callers to match; there are still some "void *"'s in contrib and the PL's. This is intentional so that we can see if anyone's compiler complains about it.)

This requires some refactoring of the ProcessUtility API, but it ends up cleaner anyway, for instance we can get rid of the QueryContext global. Still to do: fix up SPI and related code to use the plan cache; I'm tempted to try to make SQL functions use it too. Also, there are at least some aspects of system state that we want to ensure remain the same during a replan as in the original processing; search_path certainly ought to behave that way for instance, and perhaps there are others.

Among other things this should fix the problem noted awhile back that pg_dump may fail for foreign-key constraints on user-defined types when the required operators aren't in the search path. This also means that the former warning condition about "foreign key constraint will require costly sequential scans" is gone: if the comparison condition isn't indexable then we'll reject the constraint entirely. All per past discussions. Along the way, make the RI triggers look into pg_constraint for their information, instead of using pg_trigger.tgargs; and get rid of the always error-prone fixed-size string buffers in ri_triggers.c in favor of building up the RI queries in StringInfo buffers. initdb forced due to columns added to pg_constraint and pg_trigger.

Formerly the executor looked up the default equality operator for the datatype, which was really pretty shaky, since it's possible that the data being fed to the node is sorted according to some nondefault operator class that could have an incompatible idea of equality. The planner knows what it has sorted by and therefore can provide the right equality operator to use. Also, this change moves a couple of catalog lookups out of the executor and into the planner, which should help startup time for pre-planned queries by some small amount. Modify the planner to remove some other cavalier assumptions about always being able to use the default operators. Also add "nulls first/last" info to the Plan node for a mergejoin --- neither the executor nor the planner can cope yet, but at least the API is in place.

Memo to self: when exercising cache flush scenarios, must disable LookupOpclassInfo's internal cache too.

This commit restructures the catalogs and cleans up enough of the fallout so that everything still works at least as well as before, but most of the work needed to actually improve the planner's behavior will come later. Also, there are not yet CREATE/DROP/ALTER OPERATOR FAMILY commands; the only way to create a new family right now is to allow CREATE OPERATOR CLASS to make one by default. I owe some more documentation work, too. But that can all be done in smaller pieces once this infrastructure is in place.

Manual solution of the problem is possible in 8.0 (just delete the pg_internal.init files before starting WAL replay), so that may be a sufficient answer.

The specific example shown by Jeff is new in 8.1, but to be on the safe side I'm backpatching 8.0 as well. We could patch 7.x similarly but I think that's probably overkill, given the lack of evidence of old bugs of this ilk.

Removal of separate RULE privilege is needed to prevent various scenarios in which a grantee of RULE privilege could effectively have any privilege of the table owner.
