* Fix behavior of printTable() and friends with externally-invoked pager.Tom Lane2015-12-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The formatting modes that depend on knowledge of the terminal window width did not work right when printing a query result that's been fetched in sections (as a result of FETCH_SIZE). ExecQueryUsingCursor() would force use of the pager as soon as there's more than one result section, and then print.c would see an output file pointer that's not stdout and incorrectly conclude that the terminal window width isn't relevant. This has been broken all along for non-expanded "wrapped" output format, and as of 9.5 the issue affects expanded mode as well. The problem also caused "\pset expanded auto" mode to invariably *not* switch to expanded output in a segmented result, which seems to me to be exactly backwards. To fix, we need to pass down an "is_pager" flag to inform the print.c subroutines that some calling level has already replaced stdout with a pager pipe, so they should (a) not do that again and (b) nonetheless honor the window size. (Notably, this makes the first is_pager test in print_aligned_text() not be dead code anymore.) This patch is a bit invasive because there are so many existing calls of printQuery()/printTable(), but fortunately all but a couple can just pass "false" for the added parameter. Back-patch to 9.5 but no further. Given the lack of field complaints, it's not clear that we should change the behavior in stable branches. Also, the API change for printQuery()/printTable() might possibly break third-party code, again something we don't like to do in stable branches. However, it's not quite too late to do this in 9.5, and with the larger scope of the problem there, it seems worth doing.

* Remove the new UPSERT command tag and use INSERT instead.Andres Freund2015-05-23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Previously, INSERT with ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE specified used a new command tag -- UPSERT. It was introduced out of concern that INSERT as a command tag would be a misrepresentation for ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE, as some affected rows may actually have been updated. Alvaro Herrera noticed that the implementation of that new command tag was incomplete; in subsequent discussion we concluded that having it doesn't provide benefits that are in line with the compatibility breaks it requires. * Add support for INSERT ... ON CONFLICT DO NOTHING/UPDATE.Andres Freund2015-05-08
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The newly added ON CONFLICT clause allows to specify an alternative to raising a unique or exclusion constraint violation error when inserting. ON CONFLICT refers to constraints that can either be specified using a inference clause (by specifying the columns of a unique constraint) or by naming a unique or exclusion constraint. DO NOTHING avoids the constraint violation, without touching the pre-existing row. DO UPDATE SET ... [WHERE ...] updates the pre-existing tuple, and has access to both the tuple proposed for insertion and the existing tuple; the optional WHERE clause can be used to prevent an update from being executed. The UPDATE SET and WHERE clauses have access to the tuple proposed for insertion using the "magic" EXCLUDED alias, and to the pre-existing tuple using the table name or its alias. This feature is often referred to as upsert. This is implemented using a new infrastructure called "speculative insertion". It is an optimistic variant of regular insertion that first does a pre-check for existing tuples and then attempts an insert. If a violating tuple was inserted concurrently, the speculatively inserted tuple is deleted and a new attempt is made. If the pre-check finds a matching tuple the alternative DO NOTHING or DO UPDATE action is taken. If the insertion succeeds without detecting a conflict, the tuple is deemed inserted. To handle the possible ambiguity between the excluded alias and a table named excluded, and for convenience with long relation names, INSERT INTO now can alias its target table. * psql: fix \connect with URIs and conninfo stringsAlvaro Herrera2015-04-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is the second try at this, after fcef1617295 failed miserably and had to be reverted: as it turns out, libpq cannot depend on libpgcommon after all. Instead of shuffling code in the master branch, make that one just like 9.4 and accept the duplication. (This was all my own mistake, not the patch submitter's). psql was already accepting conninfo strings as the first parameter in \connect, but the way it worked wasn't sane; some of the other parameters would get the previous connection's values, causing it to connect to a completely unexpected server or, more likely, not finding any server at all because of completely wrong combinations of parameters. Fix by explicitely checking for a conninfo-looking parameter in the dbname position; if one is found, use its complete specification rather than mix with the other arguments. Also, change tab-completion to not try to complete conninfo/URI-looking "dbnames" and document that conninfos are accepted as first argument. There was a weak consensus to backpatch this, because while the behavior of using the dbname as a conninfo is nowhere documented for \connect, it is reasonable to expect that it works because it does work in many other contexts. Therefore this is backpatched all the way back to 9.0. Author: David Fetter, Andrew Dunstan. Some editorialization by me (probably earning a Gierth's "Sloppy" badge in the process.) * Add a pager_min_lines setting to psqlAndrew Dunstan2015-03-28
| | | | | | | | | | If set, the pager will not be used unless this many lines are to be displayed, even if that is more than the screen depth. Default is zero, meaning it's disabled. There is probably more work to be done in giving the user control over when the pager is used, particularly when wide output forces use of the pager regardless of how many lines there are, but this is a start.

* Allow \watch to display query execution time if \timing is enabled.Fujii Masao2014-09-04
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Previously \watch could not display the query execution time even when \timing was enabled because it used PSQLexec instead of SendQuery and that function didn't support \timing. This patch introduces PSQLexecWatch and changes \watch so as to use it, instead. PSQLexecWatch is the function to run the query, print its results and display how long it took (only when \timing is enabled). This patch also changes --echo-hidden so that it doesn't print the query that \watch executes. Since \watch cannot execute backslash command queries, they should not be printed even when --echo-hidden is set. Patch by me, review by Heikki Linnakangas and Michael Paquier

* Prevent psql from issuing BEGIN before ALTER SYSTEM when AUTOCOMMIT is off.Fujii Masao2014-07-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | The autocommit-off mode works by issuing an implicit BEGIN just before any command that is not already in a transaction block and is not itself a BEGIN or other transaction-control command, nor a command that cannot be executed inside a transaction block. This commit prevents psql from issuing such an implicit BEGIN before ALTER SYSTEM because it's not allowed inside a transaction block. Backpatch to 9.4 where ALTER SYSTEM was added. * Allow psql to print COPY command status in more cases.Tom Lane2014-03-13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Previously, psql would print the "COPY nnn" command status only for COPY commands executed server-side. Now it will print that for frontend copies too (including \copy). However, we continue to suppress the command status for COPY TO STDOUT, since in that case the copy data has been routed to the same place that the command status would go, and there is a risk of the status line being mistaken for another line of COPY data. Doing that would break existing scripts, and it doesn't seem worth the benefit --- this case seems fairly analogous to SELECT, for which we also suppress the command status. * Fix tracking of psql script line numbers during \copy from another place.Tom Lane2014-03-10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit 08146775acd8bfe0fcc509c71857abb928697171 changed do_copy() to temporarily scribble on pset.cur_cmd_source. That was a mighty ugly bit of code in any case, but in particular it broke handleCopyIn's ability to tell whether it was reading from the current script source file (in which case pset.lineno should be incremented for each line of COPY data), or from someplace else (in which case it shouldn't). The former case still worked, the latter not so much. The visible effect was that line numbers reported for errors in a script file would be wrong if there were an earlier \copy that was reading anything other than inline-in-the-script-file data. To fix, introduce another pset field that holds the file do_copy wants the COPY code to use. This is a little bit ugly, but less so than passing the file down explicitly through several layers that aren't COPY-specific. Extracted from a larger patch by Kumar Rajeev Rastogi; that patch also changes printing of COPY command tags, which is not a bug fix and shouldn't get back-patched. This particular idea was from a suggestion by Amit Khandekar, if I'm reading the thread correctly. Back-patch to 9.2 where the faulty code was introduced.

* Move pqsignal() to libpgport.Tom Lane2013-03-17
| | | | | | | | | We had two copies of this function in the backend and libpq, which was already pretty bogus, but it turns out that we need it in some other programs that don't use libpq (such as pg_test_fsync). So put it where it probably should have been all along. The signal-mask-initialization support in src/backend/libpq/pqsignal.c stays where it is, though, since we only need that in the backend.
* Create libpgcommon, and move pg_malloc et al to itAlvaro Herrera2013-02-12
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | libpgcommon is a new static library to allow sharing code among the various frontend programs and backend; this lets us eliminate duplicate implementations of common routines. We avoid libpgport, because that's intended as a place for porting issues; per discussion, it seems better to keep them separate. The first use case, and the only implemented by this patch, is pg_malloc and friends, which many frontend programs were already using. At the same time, we can use this to provide palloc emulation functions for the frontend; this way, some palloc-using files in the backend can also be used by the frontend cleanly. To do this, we change palloc() in the backend to be a function instead of a macro on top of MemoryContextAlloc(). This was previously believed to cause loss of performance, but this implementation has been tweaked by Tom and Andres so that on modern compilers it provides a slight improvement over the previous one. This lets us clean up some places that were already with localized hacks. Most of the pg_malloc/palloc changes in this patch were authored by Andres Freund. Zoltán Böszörményi also independently provided a form of that. libpgcommon infrastructure was authored by Álvaro.

* Prevent "\g filename" from affecting subsequent commands after an error.Tom Lane2013-02-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In the previous coding, psql's state variable saying that output should go to a file was only reset after successful completion of a query returning tuples. Thus for example, regression=# select 1/0 regression-# \g somefile ERROR: division by zero regression=# select 1/2; regression=# ... huh, I wonder where that output went. Even more oddly, the state was not reset even if it's the file that's causing the failure: regression=# select 1/2 \g /foo /foo: Permission denied regression=# select 1/2; /foo: Permission denied regression=# select 1/2; /foo: Permission denied This seems to me not to satisfy the principle of least surprise. \g is certainly not documented in a way that suggests its effects are at all persistent. To fix, adjust the code so that the flag is reset at exit from SendQuery no matter what happened. Noted while reviewing the \gset patch, which had comparable issues. Arguably this is a bug fix, but I'll refrain from back-patching for now.

* Work around unportable behavior of malloc(0) and realloc(NULL, 0).Tom Lane2012-10-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | On some platforms these functions return NULL, rather than the more common practice of returning a pointer to a zero-sized block of memory. Hack our various wrapper functions to hide the difference by substituting a size request of 1. This is probably not so important for the callers, who should never touch the block anyway if they asked for size 0 --- but it's important for the wrapper functions themselves, which mistakenly treated the NULL result as an out-of-memory failure. This broke at least pg_dump for the case of no user-defined aggregates, as per report from Matthew Carrington. Back-patch to 9.2 to fix the pg_dump issue. Given the lack of previous complaints, it seems likely that there is no live bug in previous releases, even though some of these functions were in place before that.
* Standardize naming of malloc/realloc/strdup wrapper functions.Tom Lane2012-10-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | We had a number of variants on the theme of "malloc or die", with the majority named like "pg_malloc", but by no means all. Standardize on the names pg_malloc, pg_malloc0, pg_realloc, pg_strdup. Get rid of pg_calloc entirely in favor of using pg_malloc0. This is an essentially cosmetic change, so no back-patch. (I did find a couple of places where psql and pg_dump were using plain malloc or strdup instead of the pg_ versions, but they don't look significant enough to bother back-patching.)

* Remove useless PGRES_COPY_BOTH "support" in psql.Tom Lane2012-04-04
| | | | | | | | | | | | There is no existing or foreseeable case in which psql should see a PGRES_COPY_BOTH PQresultStatus; and if such a case ever emerges, it's a pretty good bet that these code fragments wouldn't do the right thing anyway. Remove them, and let the existing default cases do the appropriate thing, namely emit an "unexpected PQresultStatus" bleat. Noted while working on libpq row processor patch, for which I was considering adding a PGRES_SUSPENDED status code --- the same default-case treatment would be appropriate for that.

* Have \copy go through SendQueryAlvaro Herrera2012-01-25
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This enables a bunch of features, notably ON_ERROR_ROLLBACK. It also makes COPY failure (either in the server or psql) as a whole behave more sanely in psql. Additionally, having more commands in the same command line as COPY works better (though since psql splits lines at semicolons, this doesn't matter much unless you're using -c). Also tighten a couple of switches on PQresultStatus() to add PGRES_COPY_BOTH support and stop assuming that unknown statuses received are errors; have those print diagnostics where warranted.
