Here is a patch for the above, including a documentation update. It creates a new GUC variable "preload_libraries", that accepts a list in the form: preload_libraries = '$libdir/mylib1:initfunc,$libdir/mylib2' If ":initfunc" is omitted or not found, no initialization function is executed, but the library is still preloaded. If "$libdir/mylib" isn't found, the postmaster refuses to start. In my testing with PL/R, it reduces the first call to a PL/R function (after connecting) from almost 2 seconds, down to about 8 ms. * Simplify timezone-handling code per proposal to pghackers: get rid ofTom Lane2003-02-22
| | | | | | | | setting timezone-related variables during transaction start. They were not used anyway in platforms that HAVE_TM_ZONE or HAVE_INT_TIMEZONE, which it appears is *all* the platforms we are currently supporting. For platforms that have neither, we now only support UTC or numeric- offset-from-UTC timezones.

* Assorted fixes for Cygwin:Peter Eisentraut2002-09-05
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Eliminate the mysterious games that the Cygwin build plays with the linker flag variables. DLLLIBS is gone, use SHLIB_LINK like everyone else. Detect cygipc in configure, after the linker flags are set up, otherwise configure might not work at all. Make sure everything is covered by make clean. Fix the build of the new conversion procedure modules. Add new DLLIMPORT markers where required. Finally, the compiler complains if we use an explicit -I/usr/local/include, so don't do that. Curiously, -L/usr/local/lib is still necessary.

* This patch reserves the last superuser_reserved_connections slots forBruce Momjian2002-08-29
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | connections by the superuser only. This patch replaces the last patch I sent a couple of days ago. It closes a connection that has not been authorised by a superuser if it would leave less than the GUC variable ReservedBackends (superuser_reserved_connections in postgres.conf) backend process slots free in the SISeg. This differs to the first patch which only reserved the last ReservedBackends slots in the procState array. This has made the free slot test more expensive due to the use of a lock. After thinking about a comment on the first patch I've also made it a fatal error if the number of reserved slots is not less than the maximum number of connections. Nigel J. Andrews

* Merge the last few variable.c configuration variables into the genericTom Lane2002-05-17
| | | | | | | | | GUC support. It's now possible to set datestyle, timezone, and client_encoding from postgresql.conf and per-database or per-user settings. Also, implement rollback of SET commands that occur in a transaction that later fails. Create a SET LOCAL var = value syntax that sets the variable only for the duration of the current transaction. All per previous discussions in pghackers.
* Create an internal semaphore API that is not tied to SysV semaphores.Tom Lane2002-05-05

* Do not accept interrupts in RESUME_INTERRUPTS() and END_CRIT_SECTION()Tom Lane2002-01-01

* Fix getopt-vs-init_ps_display problem by copying original argv[] info,Tom Lane2001-10-21

* Implement new 'lightweight lock manager' that's intermediate betweenTom Lane2001-09-29
| | | | | | | | | existing lock manager and spinlocks: it understands exclusive vs shared lock but has few other fancy features. Replace most uses of spinlocks with lightweight locks. All remaining uses of spinlocks have very short lock hold times (a few dozen instructions), so tweak spinlock backoff code to work efficiently given this assumption. All per my proposal on pghackers 26-Sep-01.

* Make the world somewhat safe for (not from) DELETE FROM pg_shadow;Peter Eisentraut2001-09-08
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Assign the fixed user id 1 to the user created by initdb. A stand-alone backend will always set the user id to 1. (Consequently, the name of that user is no longer important.) In stand-alone mode, the user id 1 will have implicit superuser status, to allow repairs even if there are no users defined. Print a warning message when starting in stand-alone mode when no users are defined. Disallow dropping the current user and session user. Granting/revoking superuser status also grants/revokes usecatupd. (Previously, it would never grant it back. This could lead to "deadlocks".) CREATE USER and CREATE GROUP will start allocating user ids at 100 (unless explicitly specified), to prevent accidental creation of a superuser (plus some room for future extensions).
* Use MD5 for wire protocol encryption for >= 7.2 client/server.Bruce Momjian2001-08-15
| | | | | | | Allow pg_shadow to be MD5 encrypted. Add ENCRYPTED/UNENCRYPTED option to CREATE/ALTER user. Add password_encryption postgresql.conf option. Update wire protocol version to 2.1.
* Endeavor to make pgstats buffer process (a) safe and (b) useful.Tom Lane2001-08-05
| | | | | | | | Make sure it exits immediately when collector process dies --- in old code, buffer process would hang around and compete with the new buffer process for packets. Make sure it doesn't block on writing the pipe when the collector falls more than a pipeload behind. Avoid leaking pgstats FDs into every backend.
* The attached patch enables the contrib subtree to build cleanly underBruce Momjian2001-06-18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Cygwin with the possible exception of mSQL-interface. Since I don't have mSQL installed, I skipped this tool. Except for dealing with a missing getopt.h (oid2name) and HUGE (seg), the bulk of the patch uses the standard PostgreSQL approach to deal with Windows DLL issues. I tested the build aspect of this patch under Cygwin and Linux without any ill affects. Note that I did not actually attempt to test the code for functionality. The procedure to apply the patch is as follows: $ # save the attachment as /tmp/contrib.patch $ # change directory to the top of the PostgreSQL source tree $ patch -p0 </tmp/contrib.patch Jason

* XLOG (and related) changes:Tom Lane2001-03-13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | * Store two past checkpoint locations, not just one, in pg_control. On startup, we fall back to the older checkpoint if the newer one is unreadable. Also, a physical copy of the newest checkpoint record is kept in pg_control for possible use in disaster recovery (ie, complete loss of pg_xlog). Also add a version number for pg_control itself. Remove archdir from pg_control; it ought to be a GUC parameter, not a special case (not that it's implemented yet anyway). * Suppress successive checkpoint records when nothing has been entered in the WAL log since the last one. This is not so much to avoid I/O as to make it actually useful to keep track of the last two checkpoints. If the things are right next to each other then there's not a lot of redundancy gained... * Change CRC scheme to a true 64-bit CRC, not a pair of 32-bit CRCs on alternate bytes. Polynomial borrowed from ECMA DLT1 standard. * Fix XLOG record length handling so that it will work at BLCKSZ = 32k. * Change XID allocation to work more like OID allocation. (This is of dubious necessity, but I think it's a good idea anyway.) * Fix a number of minor bugs, such as off-by-one logic for XLOG file wraparound at the 4 gig mark. * Add documentation and clean up some coding infelicities; move file format declarations out to include files where planned contrib utilities can get at them. * Checkpoint will now occur every CHECKPOINT_SEGMENTS log segments or every CHECKPOINT_TIMEOUT seconds, whichever comes first. It is also possible to force a checkpoint by sending SIGUSR1 to the postmaster (undocumented feature...) * Defend against kill -9 postmaster by storing shmem block's key and ID in postmaster.pid lockfile, and checking at startup to ensure that no processes are still connected to old shmem block (if it still exists). * Switch backends to accept SIGQUIT rather than SIGUSR1 for emergency stop, for symmetry with postmaster and xlog utilities. Clean up signal handling in bootstrap.c so that xlog utilities launched by postmaster will react to signals better. * Standalone bootstrap now grabs lockfile in target directory, as added insurance against running it in parallel with live postmaster.
* Restructure the key include files per recent pghackers discussion: thereTom Lane2001-02-10
| | | | | | | | | | | are now separate files "postgres.h" and "postgres_fe.h", which are meant to be the primary include files for backend .c files and frontend .c files respectively. By default, only include files meant for frontend use are installed into the installation include directory. There is a new make target 'make install-all-headers' that adds the whole content of the src/include tree to the installed fileset, for use by people who want to develop server-side code without keeping the complete source tree on hand. Cleaned up a whole lot of crufty and inconsistent header inclusions.
* Re-read Unix-socket lock file every so often (every CheckPoint interval,Tom Lane2001-01-27

* Make critical sections (elog->crash) and interrupt holdoff sectionsTom Lane2001-01-19

* Restructure backend SIGINT/SIGTERM handling so that 'die' interruptsTom Lane2001-01-14
| | | | | | | are treated more like 'cancel' interrupts: the signal handler sets a flag that is examined at well-defined spots, rather than trying to cope with an interrupt that might happen anywhere. See pghackers discussion of 1/12/01.

If postmaster is going to reject a connection request based on database state, it will now tell you so before authentication exchange not after. (Of course, a failure after is still possible if conditions change meanwhile, but this makes life easier for a yet-to-be-written pg_ping utility.)
