(Also, when reading pg_dumpall output, it could be that the schemas don't exist yet, but eventually will.) ALTER USER SET has a similar issue. So, reduce the normal ERROR to a NOTICE when checking search_path values for these commands. Supporting this requires changing the API for GUC assign_hook functions, which causes the patch to touch a lot of places, but the changes are conceptually trivial.

Stop treating IPv4 as an "unsigned int" and IPv6 as an array of characters. Instead, always use the array of characters so we can have one function fits all. This makes bitncmp(), addressOK(), and several other functions "just work" on both address families. add family() function which returns integer 4 or 6 for IPv4 or IPv6. (See examples below) Note that to add this new function you will need to dump/initdb/reload or find the correct magic to add the function to the postgresql function catalogs. IPv4 addresses always sort before IPv6. On disk we use AF_INET for IPv4, and AF_INET+1 for IPv6 addresses. This prevents the need for a dump and reload, but lets IPv6 parsing work on machines without AF_INET6. To select all IPv4 addresses from a table: select * from foo where family(addr) = 4 ... Clean up resolution of ambiguous operators/functions to avoid surprising choices for domains: domains are treated as equivalent to their base types and binary-coercibility is no longer considered a preference item when choosing among multiple operators/functions. IsBinaryCoercible now correctly reflects the notion that you need *only* relabel the type to get from type A to type B: that is, a domain is binary-coercible to its base type, but not vice versa. Various marginal cleanup, including merging the essentially duplicate resolution code in parse_func.c and parse_oper.c. Improve opr_sanity regression test to understand about binary compatibility (using pg_cast), and fix a couple of small errors in the catalogs revealed thereby. Restructure "special operator" handling to fetch operators via index opclasses rather than hardwiring assumptions about names (cleans up the pattern_ops stuff a little).

This can be useful -- for example, it can be used to select a random sampling of the rows in a table (which is what the "random" regression test uses it for). This patch removes that function, because it was old and messy. The old function had the following problems: - it was undocumented - it was poorly named - it was designed to workaround an optimizer bug that no longer exists (the OID argument is to ensure that the optimizer won't optimize away calls to the function; AFAIK marking the function as 'volatile' suffices nowadays) - it used a different random-number generation technique than the other PSRNG-related functions in the backend do (it called random() like they do, but it had its own logic for setting a set and deciding when to reseed the RNG). Ok, this patch removes oidrand(), oidsrand(), and userfntest(), and improves the SGML docs a little bit (un-commenting the setseed() documentation). Neil Conway

Introduce a well-defined promotion hierarchy for numeric datatypes (int2->int4->int8->numeric->float4->float8). Change make_const to initially label numeric literals as int4, int8, or numeric (never float8 anymore). Explicitly mark Func and RelabelType nodes to indicate whether they came from a function call, explicit cast, or implicit cast; use this to do reverse-listing more accurately and without so many heuristics. Explicit casts to char, varchar, bit, varbit will truncate or pad without raising an error (the pre-7.2 behavior), while assigning to a column without any explicit cast will still raise an error for wrong-length data like 7.3. This more nearly follows the SQL spec than 7.2 behavior (we should be reporting a 'completion condition' in the explicit-cast cases, but we have no mechanism for that, so just do silent truncation). Fix some problems with enforcement of typmod for array elements; it didn't work at all in 'UPDATE ... SET array[n] = foo', for example. Provide a generalized array_length_coerce() function to replace the specialized per-array-type functions that used to be needed (and were missing for NUMERIC as well as all the datetime types). Add missing conversions int8<->float4, text<->numeric, oid<->int8. initdb forced.

During initdb a system view is created to expose the same information presently available through SHOW ALL.
