=head1 Name

lua-resty-limit-traffic - Lua library for limiting and controlling traffic in OpenResty/ngx_lua

=head1 Status

This library is already usable though still highly experimental.

The Lua API is still in flux and may change in the near future without notice.

=head1 Description

This library provides several Lua modules to help OpenResty/ngx_lua users to control and
limit
the traffic, either request rate or request concurrency (or both).

=over

=item *

L<resty.limit.req|lib/resty/limit/req.md> provides request rate limiting and adjustment based on the "leaky bucket" method.

=item *

L<resty.limit.count|lib/resty/limit/count.md> provides rate limiting based on a "fixed window" implementation since OpenResty 1.13.6.1+.

=item *

L<resty.limit.conn|lib/resty/limit/conn.md> provides request concurrency level limiting and adjustment based on extra delays.

=item *

L<resty.limit.traffic|lib/resty/limit/traffic.md> provides an aggregator to combine multiple instances of the L<resty.limit.req|lib/resty/limit/req.md>, L<resty.limit.count|lib/resty/limit/count.md>, or L<resty.limit.conn|lib/resty/limit/conn.md> classes (or all).

=back

Please check out these Lua modules' own documentation for more details.

This library provides more flexible alternatives to NGINX's standard modules
L<ngx_limit_req|http://nginx.org/en/docs/http/ngx_http_limit_req_module.html>
and L<ngx_limit_conn|http://nginx.org/en/docs/http/ngx_http_limit_conn_module.html>.
For example, the Lua-based limiters provided by this library can be used in any contexts
like right before the downstream SSL handshaking procedure (as with C<ssl_certificate_by_lua>)
or right before issuing backend requests.

=head1 Installation

This library is enabled by default in L<OpenResty|https://openresty.org/> 1.11.2.2+.

If you have to install this library manually,
then ensure you are using at least OpenResty 1.11.2.1 or a custom nginx build including ngx_lua 0.10.6+. Also, You need to configure
the L<lua_package_path|https://github.com/openresty/lua-nginx-module#lua_package_path> directive to
add the path of your C<lua-resty-limit-traffic> source tree to ngx_lua's Lua module search path, as in

    # nginx.conf
    http {
        lua_package_path "/path/to/lua-resty-limit-traffic/lib/?.lua;;";
        ...
    }

and then load one of the modules provided by this library in Lua. For example,

    local limit_req = require "resty.limit.req"
