The problem was introduced in commit 9ff68679b5, which removed the redundant calls to ExecOpenIndices/ExecCloseIndices. The previous code was relying on the redundant ExecOpenIndices call in apply_handle_tuple_routing() to build the index information required for unique key conflict detection. The fix is to delay building the index information until a conflict is detected instead of relying on ExecOpenIndices to do the same. The additional benefit of this approach is that it avoids building index information when there is no conflict. Previously, the apply worker detected and reported only the first encountered key conflict (insert_exists/update_exists), causing repeated failures as each constraint violation needs to be handled one by one making the process slow and error-prone. With this patch, the apply worker checks all unique constraints upfront once the first key conflict is detected and reports multiple_unique_conflicts if multiple violations exist. This allows users to resolve all conflicts at once by deleting all conflicting tuples rather than dealing with them individually or skipping the transaction. In the future, this will also allow us to specify different resolution handlers for such a conflict type. Add the stats for this conflict type in pg_stat_subscription_stats. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Expose the count of index searches/index descents in EXPLAIN ANALYZE's output for index scan/index-only scan/bitmap index scan nodes. This information is particularly useful with scans that use ScalarArrayOp quals, where the number of index searches can be unpredictable due to implementation details that interact with physical index characteristics (at least with nbtree SAOP scans, since Postgres 17 commit 5bf748b8). The information shown also provides useful context when EXPLAIN ANALYZE runs a plan with an index scan node that successfully applied the skip scan optimization (set to be added to nbtree by an upcoming patch). The instrumentation works by teaching all index AMs to increment a new nsearches counter whenever a new index search begins. The counter is incremented at exactly the same point that index AMs already increment the pg_stat_*_indexes.idx_scan counter (we're counting the same event, but at the scan level rather than the relation level). Parallel queries have workers copy their local counter struct into shared memory when an index scan node ends -- even when it isn't a parallel aware scan node. An earlier version of this patch that only worked with parallel aware scans became commit 5ead85fb (though that was quickly reverted by commit d00107cd following "debug_parallel_query=regress" buildfarm failures). Our approach doesn't match the approach used when tracking other index scan related costs (e.g., "Rows Removed by Filter:"). It is comparable to the approach used in similar cases involving costs that are only readily accessible inside an access method, not from the executor proper (e.g., "Heap Blocks:" output for a Bitmap Heap Scan, which was recently enhanced to show per-worker costs by commit 5a1e6df3, using essentially the same scheme as the one used here). It is necessary for index AMs to have direct responsibility for maintaining the new counter, since the counter might need to be incremented multiple times per amgettuple call (or per amgetbitmap call). But it is also necessary for the executor proper to manage the shared memory now used to transfer each worker's counter struct to the leader. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The function calls GetLatestSnapshot() to acquire a fresh snapshot, makes it active, and was meant to pass it to table_tuple_lock(), but instead called GetLatestSnapshot() again to acquire yet another snapshot. It was harmless because the heap AM and all other known table AMs ignore the 'snapshot' argument anyway, but let's be tidy. In the long run, this perhaps should be redesigned so that snapshot was not needed in the first place. The table AM API uses TID + snapshot as the unique identifier for the row version, which is questionable when the row came from an index scan with a Dirty snapshot. You might lock a different row version when you use a different snapshot in the table_tuple_lock() call (a fresh MVCC snapshot) than in the index scan (DirtySnapshot). However, in the heap AM and other AMs where the TID alone identifies the row version, it doesn't matter. So for now, just fix the obvious albeit harmless bug. This has been wrong ever since the table AM API was introduced in commit 5db6df0c01, so backpatch to all supported versions. It was a remnant of converting the API of the gist strategy translation from using opclass to using opfamily+opcintype (commits c09e5a6a016, 622f678c102). For looking up the gist translation function, we used the convention "amproclefttype = amprocrighttype = opclass's opcintype" (see pg_amproc.h). But each operator family should only have one translation function, and getting the right type for the lookup is sometimes cumbersome and fragile, so this is all unnecessarily complicated. To simplify this, change the gist stategy support procedure to take "any", "any" as argument. (This is arbitrary but seems intuitive. The alternative of using InvalidOid as argument(s) upsets various DDL commands, so it's not practical.) Then we don't need opcintype for the lookup, and we can remove it from all the API layers introduced by commit c09e5a6a016. This also adds some more documentation about the correct signature of the gist support function and adds more checks in gistvalidate(). This was previously underspecified. There is no way to trigger the bug reported in commit adedf54e65 but we didn't remove the corresponding code change because it is still relevant when replicating changes from a publisher with version less than 18. We decided not to backpatch this behavior change to avoid the risk of breaking existing output plugins that may be sending generated columns by default although we are not aware of any such plugin. Also, we didn't see any reports related to this on STABLE branches which is another reason not to backpatch this change. It remained possible to lose one when a backend working toward a heap_update() copied a tuple into memory just before inplace update of that tuple. In catalogs eligible for inplace update, use LOCKTAG_TUPLE to govern admission to the steps of copying an old tuple, modifying it, and issuing heap_update(). This includes MERGE commands. To avoid changing most of the pg_class DDL, don't require LOCKTAG_TUPLE when holding a relation lock sufficient to exclude inplace updaters. Back-patch to v12 (all supported versions). In v13 and v12, "UPDATE pg_class" or "UPDATE pg_database" can still lose an inplace update. The v14+ UPDATE fix needs commit 86dc90056dfdbd9d1b891718d2e5614e3e432f35, and it wasn't worth reimplementing that fix without such infrastructure. For insert_exists and update_exists conflicts, the log can include the origin and commit timestamp details of the conflicting key with track_commit_timestamp enabled. update_differ and delete_differ conflicts can only be detected when track_commit_timestamp is enabled on the subscriber. We do not offer additional logging for exclusion constraint violations because these constraints can specify rules that are more complex than simple equality checks. Resolving such conflicts won't be straightforward. This area can be further enhanced if required. Attempt to update/delete tuple with tuple_update()/tuple_delete(), which returns TM_Updated. 2. Lock tuple with tuple_lock(). 3. Re-evaluate plan qual (recheck if we still need to update/delete and calculate the new tuple for update). 4. Second attempt to update/delete tuple with tuple_update()/tuple_delete(). This attempt should be successful, since the tuple was previously locked. This commit eliminates step 2 by taking the lock during the first tuple_update()/tuple_delete() call. The heap table access method saves some effort by checking the updated tuple once instead of twice. Future undo-based table access methods, which will start from the latest row version, can immediately place a lock there. Also, this commit makes tuple_update()/tuple_delete() optionally save the old tuple into the dedicated slot. That saves efforts on re-fetching tuples in certain cases. The code in nodeModifyTable.c is simplified by removing the nested switch/case. In some cases, a more specific #include replaces another less specific one. Some manual adjustments of the automatic result: - IWYU currently doesn't know about includes that provide global variable declarations (like -Wmissing-variable-declarations), so those includes are being kept manually. - All includes for port(ability) headers are being kept for now, to play it safe. - No changes of catalog/pg_foo.h to catalog/pg_foo_d.h, to keep the patch from exploding in size. Note that this patch touches just *.c files, so nothing declared in header files changes in hidden ways. As a small example, in src/backend/access/transam/rmgr.c, some IWYU pragma annotations are added to handle a special case there. This makes REPLICA IDENTITY FULL impractical to use apart from some small number of use cases. This patch allows using indexes other than PRIMARY KEY or REPLICA IDENTITY on the subscriber during apply of update/delete. The index that can be used must be a btree index, not a partial index, and it must have at least one column reference (i.e. cannot consist of only expressions). We can uplift these restrictions in the future. There is no smart mechanism to pick the index. If there is more than one index that satisfies these requirements, we just pick the first one. We discussed using some of the optimizer's low-level APIs for this but ruled it out as that can be a maintenance burden in the long run. This patch improves the performance in the vast majority of cases and the improvement is proportional to the amount of data in the table. However, there could be some regression in a small number of cases where the indexes have a lot of duplicate and dead rows. It was discussed that those are mostly impractical cases but we can provide a table or subscription level option to disable this feature if required. In some cases this would lead to a crash, while in others it would cause the wrong merge action to be executed, or no action at all. The immediate cause of the crash was the trigger code calling ExecGetUpdateNewTuple() as part of the EPQ mechanism, which fails because during a merge ri_projectNew is NULL, since merge has its own per-action projection information, which ExecGetUpdateNewTuple() knows nothing about. Fix by arranging for the trigger code to exit early, returning the TM_Result and TM_FailureData information, if a concurrent modification is detected, allowing the merge code to do the necessary EPQ handling in its own way. Similarly, prevent the cross-partition update code from doing any EPQ processing for a merge, allowing the merge code to work out what it needs to do. This leads to a number of simplifications in nodeModifyTable.c. Most notably, the ModifyTableContext->GetUpdateNewTuple() callback is no longer needed, and mergeGetUpdateNewTuple() can be deleted, since there is no longer any requirement for get-update-new-tuple during a merge. Similarly, ModifyTableContext->cpUpdateRetrySlot is no longer needed. Thus ExecGetUpdateNewTuple() and the retry_slot handling of ExecCrossPartitionUpdate() can be restored to how they were in v14, before the merge code was added, and ExecMergeMatched() no longer needs any special-case handling for cross-partition updates. While at it, tidy up ExecUpdateEpilogue() a bit, making it handle recheckIndexes locally, rather than passing it in as a parameter, ensuring that it is freed properly. This dates back to when it was split off from ExecUpdate() to support merge. Per bug #17809 from Alexander Lakhin, and follow-up investigation of bug #17792, also from Alexander Lakhin. For UPDATE/DELETE publications, the column list needs to cover all REPLICA IDENTITY columns. For INSERT publications, the column list is arbitrary and may omit some REPLICA IDENTITY columns. Furthermore, if the table uses REPLICA IDENTITY FULL, column list is not allowed. The column list can contain only simple column references. Complex expressions, function calls etc. are not allowed. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When an update on a partitioned table referenced in foreign key constraints causes a row to move from one partition to another, the fact that the move is implemented as a delete followed by an insert on the target partition causes the foreign key triggers to have surprising behavior. For example, a given foreign key's delete trigger which implements the ON DELETE CASCADE clause of that key will delete any referencing rows when triggered for that internal DELETE, although it should not, because the referenced row is simply being moved from one partition of the referenced root partitioned table into another, not being deleted from it. This commit teaches trigger.c to skip queuing such delete trigger events on the leaf partitions in favor of an UPDATE event fired on the root target relation. Doing so is sensible because both the old and the new tuple "logically" belong to the root relation. The after trigger event queuing interface now allows passing the source and the target partitions of a particular cross-partition update when registering the update event for the root partitioned table. Along with the two ctids of the old and the new tuple, the after trigger event now also stores the OIDs of those partitions. The tuples fetched from the source and the target partitions are converted into the root table format, if necessary, before they are passed to the trigger function. The implementation currently has a limitation that only the foreign keys pointing into the query's target relation are considered, not those of its sub-partitioned partitions. That seems like a reasonable limitation, because it sounds rare to have distinct foreign keys pointing to sub-partitioned partitions instead of to the root table. This misbehavior stems from commit f56f8f8da6af (which added support for foreign keys to reference partitioned tables) not paying sufficient attention to commit 2f178441044b (which had introduced cross-partition updates a year earlier). Even though the former commit goes back to Postgres 12, we're not backpatching this fix at this time for fear of destabilizing things too much, and because there are a few ABI breaks in it that we'd have to work around in older branches. It also depends on commit f4566345cf40, which had its own share of backpatchability issues as well. When a publication is defined or modified, an optional WHERE clause can be specified. Rows that don't satisfy this WHERE clause will be filtered out. This allows a set of tables to be partially replicated. The row filter is per table. A new row filter can be added simply by specifying a WHERE clause after the table name. The WHERE clause must be enclosed by parentheses. The row filter WHERE clause for a table added to a publication that publishes UPDATE and/or DELETE operations must contain only columns that are covered by REPLICA IDENTITY. The row filter WHERE clause for a table added to a publication that publishes INSERT can use any column. If the row filter evaluates to NULL, it is regarded as "false". The WHERE clause only allows simple expressions that don't have user-defined functions, user-defined operators, user-defined types, user-defined collations, non-immutable built-in functions, or references to system columns. These restrictions could be addressed in the future. If you choose to do the initial table synchronization, only data that satisfies the row filters is copied to the subscriber. If the subscription has several publications in which a table has been published with different WHERE clauses, rows that satisfy ANY of the expressions will be copied. If a subscriber is a pre-15 version, the initial table synchronization won't use row filters even if they are defined in the publisher. The row filters are applied before publishing the changes. If the subscription has several publications in which the same table has been published with different filters (for the same publish operation), those expressions get OR'ed together so that rows satisfying any of the expressions will be replicated. This means all the other filters become redundant if (a) one of the publications have no filter at all, (b) one of the publications was created using FOR ALL TABLES, (c) one of the publications was created using FOR ALL TABLES IN SCHEMA and the table belongs to that same schema. If your publication contains a partitioned table, the publication parameter publish_via_partition_root determines if it uses the partition's row filter (if the parameter is false, the default) or the root partitioned table's row filter. The hint is received by indexes when an UPDATE takes place that does not apply an optimization like heapam's HOT (though only for indexes where all key columns are logically unchanged). Any index tuple that receives the hint on insert is expected to be a duplicate of at least one existing older version that is needed for the same logical row. Related versions will typically be stored on the same index page, at least within index AMs that apply the hint. Recognizing the difference between MVCC version churn duplicates and true logical row duplicates at the index AM level can help with cleanup of garbage index tuples. Cleanup can intelligently target tuples that are likely to be garbage, without wasting too many cycles on less promising tuples/pages (index pages with little or no version churn). This is infrastructure for an upcoming commit that will teach nbtree to perform bottom-up index deletion. No index AM actually applies the hint just yet. In this way we will never fetch it at all if the query never has use for it, and we still fetch it just once when we do need it. The reason for taking an interest in this is that if the relcache doesn't already have the check expression cached, fetching it requires obtaining AccessShareLock on the partition root. That means that operations that look like they should only touch the partition itself will also take a lock on the root. In particular we observed that TRUNCATE on a partition may take a lock on the partition's root, contributing to a deadlock situation in parallel pg_restore. As written, this patch does have a small cost, which is that we are microscopically reducing efficiency for the case where a partition has an empty check expression. ExecPartitionCheck will be called, and will go through the motions of setting up and checking an empty qual, where before it would not have been called at all. We could avoid that by adding a separate boolean flag to track whether there is a partition expression to test. However, this case only arises for a default partition with no siblings, which surely is not an interesting case in practice. Hence adding complexity for it does not seem like a good trade-off.
