* Relax ordering-related hardcoded btree requirements in planningPeter Eisentraut2025-04-06
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There were several places in ordering-related planning where a requirement for btree was hardcoded but an amcanorder index could suffice. This fixes that. We just need to do the necessary mapping between strategy numbers and compare types and adjust some related APIs so that this works independent of btree strategy numbers. For instance, non-btree amcanorder indexes can now be used to support sorting and merge joins. Also, predtest.c works independent of btree strategy numbers now. To avoid performance regressions, some details on btree and other built-in index types are still hardcoded as shortcuts, but other index types now have access to the same features by providing the required flags and callbacks. While this causes no issue in many cases, there are some where it causes a coredump, thanks to the parser's habit of scribbling on its input. Fix by making a copy before the first transformation (compare 0f43083d1). This is quite brute-force, but then so is the whole business of transforming the input twice. Per discussion in the bug thread, this implementation of json_array() parsing should be replaced completely. But that will take some work and will surely not be back-patchable, so for the moment let's take the easy way out. Oversight in 7081ac46a. Back-patch to v16 where that came in. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | If the given input_type yields valid results from both get_element_type and get_array_type, initArrayResultAny believed the former and treated the input as an array type. However this is inconsistent with what get_promoted_array_type does, leading to situations where the output of an ARRAY() subquery is labeled with the wrong type: it's labeled as oidvector[] but is really a 2-D array of OID. That at least results in strange output, and can result in crashes if further processing such as unnest() is applied. AFAIK this is only possible with the int2vector and oidvector types, which are special-cased to be treated mostly as true arrays even though they aren't quite. Fix by switching the logic to match get_promoted_array_type by testing get_array_type not get_element_type, and remove an Assert thereby made pointless. (We need not introduce a symmetrical check for get_element_type in the other if-branch, because initArrayResultArr will check it.) This restores the behavior that existed before bac27394a introduced initArrayResultAny: the output really is int2vector[] or oidvector[]. Comparable confusion exists when an input of an ARRAY[] construct is int2vector or oidvector: transformArrayExpr decides it's dealing with a multidimensional array constructor, and we end up with something that's a multidimensional OID array but is alleged to be of type oidvector. I have not found a crashing case here, but it's easy to demonstrate totally-wrong results. Adjust that code so that what you get is an oidvector[] instead, for consistency with ARRAY() subqueries. (This change also makes these types work like domains-over-arrays in this context, which seems correct.) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This allows the RETURNING list of INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE/MERGE queries to explicitly return old and new values by using the special aliases "old" and "new", which are automatically added to the query (if not already defined) while parsing its RETURNING list, allowing things like: RETURNING old.colname, new.colname, ... RETURNING old.*, new.* Additionally, a new syntax is supported, allowing the names "old" and "new" to be changed to user-supplied alias names, e.g.: RETURNING WITH (OLD AS o, NEW AS n) o.colname, n.colname, ... This is useful when the names "old" and "new" are already defined, such as inside trigger functions, allowing backwards compatibility to be maintained -- the interpretation of any existing queries that happen to already refer to relations called "old" or "new", or use those as aliases for other relations, is not changed. For an INSERT, old values will generally be NULL, and for a DELETE, new values will generally be NULL, but that may change for an INSERT with an ON CONFLICT ... DO UPDATE clause, or if a query rewrite rule changes the command type. Therefore, we put no restrictions on the use of old and new in any DML queries. Its original purpose was for use inside RowCompareExpr, and it has also found some small use outside, such as for get_op_btree_interpretation(). We want to expand this now, as a more general way to describe operator semantics for other index access methods, including gist (to improve GistTranslateStratnum()) and others not written yet. To avoid future confusion, we rename the type to CompareType and the symbols from ROWCOMPARE_XXX to COMPARE_XXX to reflect their more general purpose. Fix casting for fixed-length character and bit string types by using assignment-level casts. This is again similar to what 86d33987 did, but for ON ERROR / EMPTY expressions. 3. Use runtime coercion for the boolean ON ERROR constants so that using fixed-length character string types, for example, for an EXISTS column doesn't cause a "value too long for type character(n)" when the parser tries to coerce the default ON ERROR value "false" to that type, that is, even when clause is not specified. 4. Simplify the conditions of when to use runtime coercion vs creating the cast expression in the parser itself. jsonb-valued expressions are now always coerced at runtime and boolean expressions too if the target type is a string type for the reasons mentioned above. Tests are taken from a patch that Jian He posted. The problem with c2d93c3802b was that it only changed the casting behavior for types with typmod, and had coding issues noted in the post-commit review. This commit changes coerceJsonFuncExpr() to use assignment-level casts instead of explicit casts to coerce the result of JSON constructor functions to the specified or the default RETURNING type. Using assignment-level casts fixes the problem that using explicit casts was leading to the wrong typmod / length coercion behavior -- truncating results longer than the specified length instead of erroring out -- which c2d93c3802b aimed to solve. There are two motivations for this change: 1. json_populate_type() coerces to types with typmod such that any string values that exceed length limit cause an error instead of silent truncation, which is necessary to be standard-conforming. 2. It was possible to end up with a cast expression that doesn't support soft handling of errors causing bugs in the of handling ON ERROR clause. JsonExpr.coercion_expr which would store the cast expression is no longer necessary, so remove. Bump catversion because stored rules change because of the above removal. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 94985c210 added code to detect when WindowFuncs were monotonic and allowed additional quals to be "pushed down" into the subquery to be used as WindowClause runConditions in order to short-circuit execution in nodeWindowAgg.c. The Node representation of runConditions wasn't well selected and because we do qual pushdown before planning the subquery, the planning of the subquery could perform subquery pull-up of nested subqueries. For WindowFuncs with args, the arguments could be changed after pushing the qual down to the subquery. This was made more difficult by the fact that the code duplicated the WindowFunc inside an OpExpr to include in the WindowClauses runCondition field. This could result in duplication of subqueries and a pull-up of such a subquery could result in another initplan parameter being issued for the 2nd version of the subplan. This could result in errors such as: ERROR: WindowFunc not found in subplan target lists To fix this, we change the node representation of these run conditions and instead of storing an OpExpr containing the WindowFunc in a list inside WindowClause, we now store a new node type named WindowFuncRunCondition within a new field in the WindowFunc. These get transformed into OpExprs later in planning once subquery pull-up has been performed. This problem did exist in v15 and v16, but that was fixed by 9d36b883b and e5d20bbd. * Add basic JSON_TABLE() functionalityAmit Langote2024-04-04

Data to show in the view is selected from a source JSON object using a JSON path expression to get a sequence of JSON objects that's called a "row pattern", which becomes the source to compute the SQL/JSON values that populate the view's output columns. Column values themselves are computed using JSON path expressions applied to each of the JSON objects comprising the "row pattern", for which the SQL/JSON query functions added in 6185c9737cf4 are used. To implement JSON_TABLE() as a table function, this augments the TableFunc and TableFuncScanState nodes that are currently used to support XMLTABLE() with some JSON_TABLE()-specific fields. Note that the JSON_TABLE() spec includes NESTED COLUMNS and PLAN clauses, which are required to provide more flexibility to extract data out of nested JSON objects, but they are not implemented here to keep this commit of manageable size. There are various options to control whether multi-value result uses array wrappers and whether the singleton scalar strings are quoted or not. JSON_VALUE(), which can be used to apply a jsonpath expression to a JSON value to return a single scalar value, producing an error if it multiple values are matched. Both JSON_VALUE() and JSON_QUERY() functions have options for handling EMPTY and ERROR conditions, which can be used to specify the behavior when no values are matched and when an error occurs during jsonpath evaluation, respectively. So this commit makes it so. As a result, JsonValueExpr.raw_expr no longer needs to be evaluated in ExecInterpExpr(), eval_const_exprs_mutator() etc. and is now only used for displaying the original "unformatted" expression in ruleutils.c. While at it, this also removes the function makeCaseTestExpr(), because the code in makeJsonConstructorExpr() looks more readable without it IMO and isn't used by anyone else either. Finally, a note is added in the comment above CaseTestExpr's definition that JsonConstructorExpr is also using it. The performance impact of removing the function call inlining is proving to be too huge for some workloads where these are used. A worst-case test case of involving only simple SELECT queries with a SQL keyword is proving to lead to a reduction of 10% in TPS via pgbench and prepared queries on a high-end machine. None of the tests I ran back for this set of changes saw such a huge gap, but Alexander Lakhin and Andres Freund have found that this can be noticeable. Keeping the older performance would mean to do more inlining in the executor when using COERCE_SQL_SYNTAX for a function expression, similarly to what SQLValueFunction does. This requires more redesign work and there is little time until 16beta1 is released, so for now reverting the change is the best way forward, bringing back the previous performance.
