This largely reverts commit 3e2f3c2e423, which added the OldestActiveSnapshot tracking, and the init_toast_snapshot() function. That was only required for setting the 'whenTaken' and 'lsn' fields. SnapshotToast is now a constant again, like SnapshotSelf and SnapshotAny. I kept a thin get_toast_snapshot() wrapper around SnapshotToast though, to check that you have a registered or active snapshot. That's still a useful sanity check. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Since C99, there can be a trailing comma after the last value in an enum definition. A lot of new code has been introducing this style on the fly. Some new patches are now taking an inconsistent approach to this. Some add the last comma on the fly if they add a new last value, some are trying to preserve the existing style in each place, some are even dropping the last comma if there was one. We could nudge this all in a consistent direction if we just add the trailing commas everywhere once. I omitted a few places where there was a fixed "last" value that will always stay last. I also skipped the header files of libpq and ecpg, in case people want to use those with older compilers. There were also a small number of cases where the enum type wasn't used anywhere (but the enum values were), which ended up confusing pgindent a bit, so I left those alone. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Previous commits made it faster/more scalable to compute snapshots. But not building a snapshot is still faster. Now that GetSnapshotData() does not maintain RecentGlobal* anymore, that is actually not too hard: This commit introduces xactCompletionCount, which tracks the number of top-level transactions with xids (i.e. which may have modified the database) that completed in some form since the start of the server. We can avoid rebuilding the snapshot's contents whenever the current xactCompletionCount is the same as it was when the snapshot was originally built. Currently this check happens while holding ProcArrayLock. While it's likely possible to perform the check without acquiring ProcArrayLock, it seems better to do that separately / later, some careful analysis is required. Even with the lock this is a significant win on its own. On a smaller two socket machine this gains another ~1.03x, on a larger machine the effect is roughly double (earlier patch version tested though). If we were able to safely avoid the lock there'd be another significant gain on top of that. * snapshot scalability: Don't compute global horizons while building snapshots.Andres Freund2020-08-12
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | To make GetSnapshotData() more scalable, it cannot not look at at each proc's xmin: While snapshot contents do not need to change whenever a read-only transaction commits or a snapshot is released, a proc's xmin is modified in those cases. The frequency of xmin modifications leads to, particularly on higher core count systems, many cache misses inside GetSnapshotData(), despite the data underlying a snapshot not changing. That is the most significant source of GetSnapshotData() scaling poorly on larger systems. Without accessing xmins, GetSnapshotData() cannot calculate accurate horizons / thresholds as it has so far. But we don't really have to: The horizons don't actually change that much between GetSnapshotData() calls. Nor are the horizons actually used every time a snapshot is built. The trick this commit introduces is to delay computation of accurate horizons until there use and using horizon boundaries to determine whether accurate horizons need to be computed. The use of RecentGlobal[Data]Xmin to decide whether a row version could be removed has been replaces with new GlobalVisTest* functions. These use two thresholds to determine whether a row can be pruned: 1) definitely_needed, indicating that rows deleted by XIDs >= definitely_needed are definitely still visible. 2) maybe_needed, indicating that rows deleted by XIDs < maybe_needed can definitely be removed GetSnapshotData() updates definitely_needed to be the xmin of the computed snapshot. When testing whether a row can be removed (with GlobalVisTestIsRemovableXid()) and the tested XID falls in between the two (i.e. XID >= maybe_needed && XID < definitely_needed) the boundaries can be recomputed to be more accurate. As it is not cheap to compute accurate boundaries, we limit the number of times that happens in short succession. As the boundaries used by GlobalVisTestIsRemovableXid() are never reset (with maybe_needed updated by GetSnapshotData()), it is likely that further test can benefit from an earlier computation of accurate horizons. To avoid regressing performance when old_snapshot_threshold is set (as that requires an accurate horizon to be computed), heap_page_prune_opt() doesn't unconditionally call TransactionIdLimitedForOldSnapshots() anymore. Both the computation of the limited horizon, and the triggering of errors (with SetOldSnapshotThresholdTimestamp()) is now only done when necessary to remove tuples. This commit just removes the accesses to PGXACT->xmin from GetSnapshotData(), but other members of PGXACT residing in the same cache line are accessed. Therefore this in itself does not result in a significant improvement. Subsequent commits will take advantage of the fact that GetSnapshotData() now does not need to access xmins anymore. Note: This contains a workaround in heap_page_prune_opt() to keep the snapshot_too_old tests working. While that workaround is ugly, the tests currently are not meaningful, and it seems best to address them separately. To be able to reasonably use those, the EvalPlanQual mechanism had to be adapted, moving more logic into the AM. Previously both delete/update/lock call-sites and the EPQ mechanism had to have awareness of the specific tuple format to be able to fetch the latest version of a tuple. Obviously that needs to be abstracted away. To do so, move the logic that find the latest row version into the AM. lock_tuple has a new flag argument, TUPLE_LOCK_FLAG_FIND_LAST_VERSION, that forces it to lock the last version, rather than the current one. It'd have been possible to do so via a separate callback as well, but finding the last version usually also necessitates locking the newest version, making it sensible to combine the two. This replaces the previous use of EvalPlanQualFetch(). Additionally HeapTupleUpdated, which previously signaled either a concurrent update or delete, is now split into two, to avoid callers needing AM specific knowledge to differentiate. The move of finding the latest row version into tuple_lock means that encountering a row concurrently moved into another partition will now raise an error about "tuple to be locked" rather than "tuple to be updated/deleted" - which is accurate, as that always happens when locking rows. While possible slightly less helpful for users, it seems like an acceptable trade-off. As part of this commit HTSU_Result has been renamed to TM_Result, and its members been expanded to differentiated between updating and deleting. HeapUpdateFailureData has been renamed to TM_FailureData. The interface to speculative insertion is changed so nodeModifyTable.c does not have to set the speculative token itself anymore. Instead there's a version of tuple_insert, tuple_insert_speculative, that performs the speculative insertion (without requiring a flag to signal that fact), and the speculative insertion is either made permanent with table_complete_speculative(succeeded = true) or aborted with succeeded = false). Note that multi_insert is not yet routed through tableam, nor is COPY. Changing multi_insert requires changes to copy.c that are large enough to better be done separately. Similarly, although simpler, CREATE TABLE AS and CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW are also only going to be adjusted in a later commit. Thus add a new Snapshot->snapshot_type field, and move the dispatch into HeapTupleSatisfiesVisibility() (which is now a function). Later work will then dispatch calls to HeapTupleSatisfiesVisibility() and other AMs visibility functions depending on the type of the table. The central SnapshotType enum also seems like a good location to centralize documentation about the intended behaviour of various types of snapshots. As tqual.h isn't included by bufmgr.h any more (as HeapTupleSatisfies* isn't referenced by TestForOldSnapshot() anymore) a few files now need to include it directly. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In commit fccebe421, we hacked get_actual_variable_range() to scan the index with SnapshotDirty, so that if there are many uncommitted tuples at the end of the index range, it wouldn't laboriously scan through all of them looking for a live value to return. However, that didn't fix it for the case of many recently-dead tuples at the end of the index; SnapshotDirty recognizes those as committed dead and so we're back to the same problem. To improve the situation, invent a "SnapshotNonVacuumable" snapshot type and use that instead. The reason this helps is that, if the snapshot rejects a given index entry, we know that the indexscan will mark that index entry as killed. This means the next get_actual_variable_range() scan will proceed past that entry without visiting the heap, making the scan a lot faster. We may end up accepting a recently-dead tuple as being the estimated extremal value, but that doesn't seem much worse than the compromise we made before to accept not-yet-committed extremal values. The cost of the scan is still proportional to the number of dead index entries at the end of the range, so in the interval after a mass delete but before VACUUM's cleaned up the mess, it's still possible for get_actual_variable_range() to take a noticeable amount of time, if you've got enough such dead entries. But the constant factor is much much better than before, since all we need to do with each index entry is test its "killed" bit. We chose to back-patch commit fccebe421 at the time, but I'm hesitant to do so here, because this form of the problem seems to affect many fewer people. Also, even when it happens, it's less bad than the case fixed by commit fccebe421 because we don't get the contention effects from expensive TransactionIdIsInProgress tests. Commit e3860ffa4dd0dad0dd9eea4be9cc1412373a8c89 wasn't actually using the published version of pg_bsd_indent, but a hacked-up version that tried to minimize the amount of movement of comments to the right of code. The situation of interest is where such a comment has to be moved to the right of its default placement at column 33 because there's code there. BSD indent has always moved right in units of tab stops in such cases --- but in the previous incarnation, indent was working in 8-space tab stops, while now it knows we use 4-space tabs. So the net result is that in about half the cases, such comments are placed one tab stop left of before. This is better all around: it leaves more room on the line for comment text, and it means that in such cases the comment uniformly starts at the next 4-space tab stop after the code, rather than sometimes one and sometimes two tabs after. Also, ensure that comments following #endif are indented the same as comments following other preprocessor commands such as #else. That inconsistency turns out to have been self-inflicted damage from a poorly-thought-through post-indent "fixup" in pgindent. This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects. The main changes visible in this commit are: * Nicer formatting of function-pointer declarations. * No longer unexpectedly removes spaces in expressions using casts, sizeof, or offsetof. * No longer wants to add a space in "struct structname *varname", as well as some similar cases for const- or volatile-qualified pointers. * Declarations using PG_USED_FOR_ASSERTS_ONLY are formatted more nicely. * Fixes bug where comments following declarations were sometimes placed with no space separating them from the code. * Fixes some odd decisions for comments following case labels. * Fixes some cases where comments following code were indented to less than the expected column 33. On the less good side, it now tends to put more whitespace around typedef names that are not listed in typedefs.list. This might encourage us to put more effort into typedef name collection; it's not really a bug in indent itself. There are more changes coming after this round, having to do with comment indentation and alignment of lines appearing within parentheses. I wanted to limit the size of the diffs to something that could be reviewed without one's eyes completely glazing over, so it seemed better to split up the changes as much as practical. This required including datatype/timestamp.h in a couple more places than before. I decided it would be a good idea to slim down that header by not having it pull in <float.h> etc, as those headers are no longer at all relevant to its purpose. The value of 0 is just intended for testing. Above that it is the number of minutes a snapshot can reach before pruning and vacuum are allowed to remove dead tuples which the snapshot would otherwise protect. The xmin associated with a transaction ID does still protect dead tuples. A connection which is using an "old" snapshot does not get an error unless it accesses a page modified recently enough that it might not be able to produce accurate results. This is similar to the Oracle feature, and we use the same SQLSTATE and error message for compatibility.

ON CONFLICT refers to constraints that can either be specified using a inference clause (by specifying the columns of a unique constraint) or by naming a unique or exclusion constraint. DO NOTHING avoids the constraint violation, without touching the pre-existing row. DO UPDATE SET ... [WHERE ...] updates the pre-existing tuple, and has access to both the tuple proposed for insertion and the existing tuple; the optional WHERE clause can be used to prevent an update from being executed. The UPDATE SET and WHERE clauses have access to the tuple proposed for insertion using the "magic" EXCLUDED alias, and to the pre-existing tuple using the table name or its alias. This feature is often referred to as upsert. This is implemented using a new infrastructure called "speculative insertion". It is an optimistic variant of regular insertion that first does a pre-check for existing tuples and then attempts an insert. If a violating tuple was inserted concurrently, the speculatively inserted tuple is deleted and a new attempt is made. If the pre-check finds a matching tuple the alternative DO NOTHING or DO UPDATE action is taken. If the insertion succeeds without detecting a conflict, the tuple is deemed inserted. To handle the possible ambiguity between the excluded alias and a table named excluded, and for convenience with long relation names, INSERT INTO now can alias its target table. That covered the common case that a transaction in read committed mode runs several queries, one after each other, as there would be no snapshots active between those queries. However, if you hold cursors across each of the query, we didn't get a chance to reset xmin. To make that better, keep all the registered snapshots in a pairing heap, ordered by xmin so that it's always quick to find the snapshot with the smallest xmin. That allows us to advance PGXACT->xmin whenever the oldest snapshot is deregistered, even if there are others still active. It is capable of handling decoding even across changes to the schema of the effected tables. The output format is controlled by a so-called "output plugin"; an example is included. To make use of this in a real replication system, the output plugin will need to be modified to produce output in the format appropriate to that system, and to perform filtering. Currently, information can be extracted from the logical decoding system only via SQL; future commits will add the ability to stream changes via walsender. | | | | | | | | | | | | Enabled by recovery_connections = on (default) and forcing archive recovery using a recovery.conf. Recovery processing now emulates the original transactions as they are replayed, providing full locking and MVCC behaviour for read only queries. Recovery must enter consistent state before connections are allowed, so there is a delay, typically short, before connections succeed. Replay of recovering transactions can conflict and in some cases deadlock with queries during recovery; these result in query cancellation after max_standby_delay seconds have expired. Infrastructure changes have minor effects on normal running, though introduce four new types of WAL record. New test mode "make standbycheck" allows regression tests of static command behaviour on a standby server while in recovery. Typical and extreme dynamic behaviours have been checked via code inspection and manual testing. Few port specific behaviours have been utilised, though primary testing has been on Linux only so far. This commit is the basic patch. Additional changes will follow in this release to enhance some aspects of behaviour, notably improved handling of conflicts, deadlock detection and query cancellation. Changes to VACUUM FULL are also required. Simon Riggs, with significant and lengthy review by Heikki Linnakangas, including streamlined redesign of snapshot creation and two-phase commit. | | | | | | | | | | | | | There are two ways to track a snapshot: there's the "registered" list, which is used for arbitrary long-lived snapshots; and there's the "active stack", which is used for the snapshot that is considered "active" at any time. This also allows users of snapshots to stop worrying about snapshot memory allocation and freeing, and about using PG_TRY blocks around ActiveSnapshot assignment. This is all done automatically now. As a consequence, this allows us to reset MyProc->xmin when there are no more snapshots registered in the current backend, reducing the impact that long-running transactions have on VACUUM.

The header files have also been reorganized in three parts: the most basic snapshot definitions are now in a new file snapshot.h, and the also new snapmgmt.h keeps the definitions for snapmgmt.c. tqual.h has been reduced to the bare minimum. This patch is just a first step towards managing live snapshots within a transaction; there is no functionality change.
